Sportsmart is a one stop sporting shop. Over the years I have bought cricket gear, soccer balls, footy balls, a tennis racket, gym clothes and my favourite exercise piece of equipment of all time the $ 12 Ab Roller. In fact the only piece of sporting paraphernalia that I haven’t been able to find there is some pinot coloured cricket trousers, which to be honest is not that much of a surprise. In fact Sportsmart has a better selection of sporting equipment than most other large sporting stores such as Rebel Sports, and is similarly priced. They also have an extensive range of exercise equipment including weights, punching bags, exercise machines and an excellent selection of boxing gear.

We all know how to play sports. You pick up a thing and hit it with another thing. Good for us. Problem is that when we play these sports, you can just bring any old things to a meet because your team might kick you out because you’re not taking it seriously. You have to take it seriously if you want to be a captain. You know you have the leadership skills; you need to show them that you can take them to the championships! So in step Sportsmart. They offer a wide range of sporting equipment and clothes, but their prices aren’t insane. They know that if you’re doing it every weekend(or day if you’re one of ‘those’ people who run down busy streets, knowing people will see your amazing fitness) you will be using the stuff until it breaks. So it’s annoying if it’s super pricey. I like Sportsmart for this reason. Now to go for my CBD run in front of everyone(FEELTHEBURNOFMYTHIGHSANDOTHERPEOPLESEYEBALLS).

My only actual purchasing I’ve done here was a Frisbee and bike pump last summer and I was pleasantly surprised… You cannot overestimate the positive effect a new Frisbee will have on your capacity to throw well. In fact, you cannot overestimate the effect of a new Frisbee on your overall well being and self-esteem. I’d always persisted with those shitty discs you pick up at garages or toy shops and had never really had a crack on a good one. I don’t like those ‘fad’ style discs either, you look like such a nerd throwing some bright pink triangle, no matter how far it’ll go. But if you get a correctly weighted, Ultimate Frisbee, your game will be improved forever. You can hurl these things like weapons. I take pride in blasting some in around face or ankle height, just to freak people out. They stock these here for about $ 20. $ 20! That’s a perfect birthday pressie right there yo.

Living in Australia it can feel as if there is a faintly sinister conspiracy to make recent arrivals more athletic. «Play lawn bowls with me!», «Come for a run!», «Want to watch the rugby?» A) No. B) No. C) Maybe. But only if there’s cider and/or the players are hot. That said, there is the occasional need for a sports shop. Or a sporting supermarket as Northcote’s Sportsmart ostensibly is. Stocking a range of sportswear, sports gear and equipment from frankly huge premises just opposite the entrance to the Northcote Plaza. I may not know my sports but I can spot a ruddy good selection of tennis rackets when I see them and prices seem reasonable for some pretty premium gear. Quality runs the gamut from cheap and cheerful to egregiously expensive and nearly pro and Sportsmart stocks everything from children’s swimming goggles to giant elliptical machines and the like. If you’re into sports and you need anything sporty, Sportsmart is a — predictably — good bet.
