I was walking along High Street around 4pm one Sunday afternoon and not having eaten lunch, was after a small snack to tide me over until dinner. There are a number of Asian restaurants in the area, however I chose Phở Bang Bang because they had a serving size if 2 and for the low price of $ 4. I need to applaud the staff, they were extremely friendly and no sooner had I ordered and sat down that a Thermos of tea(complimentary) and sauce for my rolls were delivered. However, when my dish was delivered(again, quite promptly, but this isn’t surprising given the limited number of other diners at 4pm on a Sunday!), I must say I was disappointed in the size of the rolls and unfortunately the taste of them wasn’t any better — I chose the prawn rolls and there just wasn’t any flavour to them, and it just made me focus on the chewy rice paper. Given this place has Phở in its name, for all I know, their take on this dish might be reason to visit, but I can’t see myself returning.

When I first visited Bang Bang a few month ago I wasn’t quite the phò expert. Yet, my bowl of special rare beef(?!) was so good that I strive ever since to find a worthy match. After visiting a couple of other joints and returning frequently to Bang Bang I have to say: I did not succeed, yet. Even though the quality of the stock varied in between my visits, it’s still one of the most delicious I had in Melbourne so far. Hearty, savory and giving you this extra warm feel of strength when it’s cold outside or you are beaten down(or just hung over). That being said, the place has also delicious complementary tea and serves decent rice paper rolls. You’ll always be able to find a seat, even when the dining room is packed to the max(which happens sometimes). Be aware of the chillies, they are the real deal ;)

Great phở! Phở can be a difficult soup to review as it relies a lot on the stock and fresh side ingredients for me. However last few times I’ve been in here I’ve had some fabourable Phở. Great salty stock and never light on the extra chillis. My one criticism is the basil and bean sprouts could have been fresher — but I feel this is a common experience at most fast-phở places.

We initially came to Bang Bang as a backup choice when neighbouring Lam Lam was flooding with people. We had no expectations of what the food would be like, but we weren’t left disappointed or hungry, The menu was hauuuuuge but we stuck with our guns and ordered a good bowl of Phở from them!

Phở Bang Bang is a little Vietnamese eatery on High street Northcote. The menu is very comprehensive serving all aspects of the Vietnamese menu. The restaurant itself is very clean, has an ample amount of chairs and tables even with some outdoor spots. The service was really friendly and the food very reasonable in price and delicious.
