On a blustery, unfriendly Spring morning, with a hankering for some dumplings, I thought I’d step out of the same old routine and give a new place a crack for Yum Cha. Enter: Unilocal reviews. Xintiandi was the pick of the bunch. As I hate lining up for food, I rang ahead to find out when they opened on a Sunday: it’s 10am. Inside the vast, dim expanse of purple décor and pretty glass bauble lighting, there was already a decent number of tables occupied. Quick scan: the patrons were all ‘guai low’(ie: anglo saxons, like me). This is not necessarily a good [or bad] thing. Service was fast and efficient and all the staff spoke excellent English. I had four dishes: steamed prawn and coriander dumplings, salt, pepper and chilli squid, Shanghai pork dumplings and BBQ pork in rice noodle. All were delicious, but fairly standard. Chinese tea arrived in a large non-drip pot. I noted that not one piece of the crockery was chipped or cracked. I find this to be unusual, but welcome! All of that cost me a mere $ 23. Sweet. Waddling a little on the way back out I noted the first round of patrons had departed, to be replaced by far more of a mixed crowd of ethnicities. It was going to be a busy morning. Hats off to the boofhead Aussie behind me who declared, quite loudly, that he «doesn’t like this Yum Cha stuff» as he asked for a fork. **facepalm**

I really wanted to have phở that day, but my friend was more into greasy food I guess. So as we were trying to find a phở place that turned out to now be a sushi place«horrible by the way, but that’s another review» we walked by this place and we were both so hungry we just walked in. I give it four three stars and not five because my ex is Chinese and I had a lot of great dim sum and I think it’s kinda pricey too despite the fact that everything in Perth costs 3x as much as it costs in the US. Still wish I had phở that day!!!

Had been craving yum cha since we began our holiday and was not disappointed! Everything was absolutely fantastic! Can’t wait to go back… the vegetarian spring roll, crispy squid, prawn wonton and crab wonton OMG!!! To die for !!

Thank you Rebel C for showing me the light! This is a great dim sum spot. Mmmmm the soft dumpling freshness. What do you get when you combine two of my favourite meats into one dumpling? Prawn & pork heaven on earth! All the dumplings that we tried were top notch, the ribs on the other hand were just strips of gelatinous fat which I was not very keen on — avoid them. You must get an custard tart for dessert, or spend your whole life knowing you missed out on one of the greatest things ever created. The still warm pastry casings with soft eggy custard could solve and silence international conflicts. It was all VERY reasonably priced. I will be back and will probably take home 20 custard tarts for *later* aka the car ride home.

My boyfriend brought me here a few months back for my birthday and I fell in love. The décor is beautiful, purple is my favourite colour though so I may be slightly biased! Every time I have come here has been a slightly different but very pleasant experience. The first time we went we were there when they opened for the day so there were no trolleys going round and we had to order off the menu, normally I get a little sad about that but our server was so helpful and we tried a few new dishes that are now all the time favourites. Try the xiaolongbao they are steamed soup filled dumplings, soooo good! The next time we went was packed! They have a massive waiting area so you don’t feel crushed while waiting for a table but we didn’t have to wait very long. The service was so quick! The trolleys all had a massive range and everything was very fresh. The only downside about coming here is that because the food is so good I eat twice as much as I would anywhere else meaning I spend twice as much as I would anywhere else. All around Xintiandi is a great place, beautiful modern décor, friendly and helpful staff, and amazing eats! Cant really go wrong here guys! Enjoy!

I went here the other day for a friend’s birthday and I was so glad I did — living overseas for a while, I really missed the yum cha restaurants in Perth — and this one was a great one to return to. We brought in our own beers and sat around until they started prepping for the dinner(and karaōke) crowd. The restaurant seems a bit more sophisticated than some of the other restaurants around town, but still had a bit of the pre-requisite bling in the chandaliers. Yum Cha wouldn’t be right without a little bit of kitsch! I arrived late so didn’t get to sample all the array that the others had, but the duck was delicious and I am always a sucker for a steamed bun.

It’s Chinese for Yum Cha! I have sampled a few yum cha places around Northbridge and thus far, this is one of my favourites. The décor is classy, I’m a sucker for crystal chandeliers, it’s a traditional theme with a modern spin. The purples and golds compliment each other and the restaurant exuding a certain elegancy. The service here is friendly as well as efficient and they are more than happy to bring out additional condiments without making you feel bad. I ate here a couple weeks ago with two friends of mine, both chefs in their own right and both chilli lovers, oh to see their eyes light up when the fried chilli chicken revealed itself! I stuck to the Asian greens and the squid and despite pacing myself; we all appeared to have outdone ourselves half an hour in. As the wait staff approached suggesting more dishes to sample I had to look away as I tried to refuse politely and I contemplated a flag system that you can hoist when you wish to no longer be approached by food. We all had a very satisfying meal and for $ 30 each, eating to our hearts content.. . and then some, this wasn’t too bad a find at all. There might be some«cheaper» yum-chas around town, but the service here is worth it’s weight.

Xintiandi is the newest incarnation of a line of restaurants that have inhabited 40 Francis Street [including Jade Dynasty]. It has received a facelift to go with its name change, with a striking dark-green stone frontage. The yum cha at Xintiandi is good, although the food choices can be limited — there are only a few trolleys that go around at any one time. The usual favourites are available, like prawn dumplings, chicken feet and glutinous rice. They also do very good stone rice dishes, such as beef and egg. Aside from one very lively and friendly lead waitress, the other staff members at Xintiandi are generally disinterested. The staff also seem easily overwhelmed — a half-full restaurant can mean missed orders. Xintiandi is a decent place for yum cha — at least you can dine in air-conditioned comfort.
