This has got to be one of my top 3 kebab joints in all of Perth. I consider myself somewhat of a kebab aficionado, not because of my fine palate or culinary knowledge but simply that I’m drunk a lot. Therefore I have consumed a great deal of these wonderful delights across many a suburb. Unlike many of its contemporaries Istanbul Café is a larger space with a bunch of seating and arcade games instead of just a hole in the wall. Apart from the usual kebab suspects(lamb, chicken etc) they also sell a bunch of actual, normal food. Not that I have tried it. The kebabs though are seriously first class. And I don’t think that even McDonalds drive through is as efficient or quick as these guys. Literally less than 2 minutes for a chicken kebab. Amazeballs.

Wow– Istabul Café(not to be mistaken for Istanbul 2) has managed to reinvent the Turkish cuisine while remaining true to the almighty kebab! Istanbul Café is locally owned and operated business which has managed to transform their establishment into a kebab funhouse! Max and Jen took on the business about 5 years ago and have been at work to build this place up to the after hours venue in Northbridge.(Catering to the slightly intoxicated folk they understand our pain and have also set up a similarly themed fun house called Altos — worth a look in if you’re up for juke box good times!) I know this from several vague, but memorable chats. The staff are hilarious, and proficient and the menu will blow your socks off before you even think about braving the hot sauces. I suggest if you’re feeling fragile to stick to what you know, kebabs, pizzas and chips(the gravy and curry sauces are to way to go) but when I had a sober stroll through Northbridge last week I noticed a new menu sporting chilli muscles and coconut curry prawns– Max, you sir, have outdone yourself!!! Initially this kebab house became my «safe haven», like most partiers in Northbridge seeking comfort in the old and faithful kebab.(opening hours Sun-Thurs 6: pm-2:am and Fri +Sat 6: pm –4:am perfect for creatures of the night) However, in time, I have been converted to believe that this café is THE place to be when you’re not ready to go home. I’m talking disco balls, loud music and personality plus behind the counter. It seems to be that they’re getting paid to party! The best thing about Max being there is that if the patrons are enjoying themselves(semi responsibly) then the party goes on! Istanbul Café has taught me a lot, most importantly– that life long friendships can be forged over a kebab!
