Following a decent write up in the current Qantas mag, nominated with Silks as the two best for Yum Cha in Pert, I felt compelled to give it a try. When I browsed through the reviews on Unilocal,I saw a couple of my favourite Unilocalers(AKA, members of «the posse») had given it the thumbs up. My destiny was guaranteed. My experience was also positive. The ladies with the trays and trolleys were actually *pleasant* and smiled(many of Pert’s other restaurants should take note this is actually observed as a reason to return). The dumplings did appear to be house made, although Pert has not cottoned on to the joy of seeing masked ladies in little white hats and surgical masks pulling dough and plumping dumplings through steamy picture windows as a décor feature. But I am sure they were out the back doing that. The price was on par and the variety enough to keep you ordering more. We rolled on outta there, having gorged our way through at least 9 plates(that’s between two, I am almost ashamed to admit) but in our defence, it was our first meal of the day after sport and then we didn’t eat again until 4-ish. So I would consider that good value. The chilli just kept on coming, the tea was replenished and the turn over was swift. It would have been mental on CNY but on any other day, it’s almost worth queueing for. Almost.

This place apparently serves noteworthy dim sum, but recently with my group of 5, it was evening and a la carte dining. They started off by serving us bowls of broth which was just as well as it took ages for our meal to arrive. We arrived at the restaurant at 7.30 and didn’t eat till 8.20. Considering the place was only half full, this was surprising as you generally get fairly quick service in Chinese restaurants. We ordered the following: 1. Tooth fish in a claypot with special sauce 2. Pork spare ribs with Peking sauce 3. Crispy skin chicken with vinegar and garlic sauce 4. Braised greens — I think it was kailin. I enjoyed the chicken with its extra crispy, paper-thin skin and subtly flavoured sauce. I don’t like spare ribs at the best of times and wonder how the heck you’re supposed to eat them delicately with chopsticks when they’re smothered in sauce, so I gave up on this dish very quickly. The other 4 in our group seemed to enjoy them though. The tooth fish was disappointingly bland, although the sauce was flavourful. I felt that the tasteless fish had been somewhat disguised by batter and thick sauce, and the end result wasn’t gratifying. The greens were beautifully cooked, and I’ve never been able to duplicate this dish at home. I know some people are indifferent to greens, but I love them and could happily eat a plate of them. Overall I found the food quality quite ordinary and I wouldn’t return there for a la carte dining as I’ve had far better Chinese food in Perth.

My new favorite place… Yum cha is fabulous! Recommended by Jamie C & boy she’s spot on. I love it here. Guess what? We chose the busiest day of the year(Mother’s day) to visit too but it’s kind of a last minute decision & I’m so glad we did. We were seated in no time(very happy abt that). The steam cart came around the moment we were seated. They wasted no time. Tea was so promptly served. Trays of fried food kept circulating & we picked whatever we loved & enjoyed every dish. Siu Mai(pork & scallops) was my favorite. Followed by radish cake in XO sauce. Oh yummy! Thoroughly enjoyed their prompt service & the young servers are always smiling & full of zest(hard to find these days). Something I didn’t see was cha Siew pastries. Well, might Hv to go back to find those. Fortune Five, you didn’t let me down. Keep up the good work! I’ll be back.

Good yum cha/dim sum. The items range from yummm to yuck. I like their mango pudding, I thought it was really fresh and it had pieces of real mango in it. I also like their scallop dumplings and prawn dumplings. They were perfectly steamed, juicy and still hot when we got them. I wasn’t a fan at all of their shu mai. It had chunky pork pieces that were chewy and rubbery. Our total cost came out to $ 50ish, which is quite pricey for yum cha. Service was very good. They’re friendly and they had enough variety of fresh items circulating around. We asked for a few items from the menu and they promptly brought them around.
