Ah City Garden. How I love your Shanghai dumplings(soup dumplings) and especially your crispy pan fried noodles with spicy XO sauce. This is the only Chinese food spot I’ve found in Perth so far that does crispy chow mein noodles. If you’ve never tried this dish, you must — the noodles are pan fried into a sort of a cake, perfectly crispy like a birds nest on the outer layer and the middle is sopping with the savoury XO sauce, stir fried veggies and pork. Happiness on a plate.

Chinese Style Went here last night after wandering through the James Street Chinese New Year festivities. I have been here on several occasions and have never been disappointed. YES it is a typical Chinese restaurant but it does what it does well. The service is ALWAYS good even when they were really busy last night. It is also BYO as you would expect so not a bad place to start a night out with friends. This time around we ordered the Steamed Prawns with garlic, Braised Chicken, Kang Kong with chilli paste and some fried rice. The overall cost of the meal was $ 67. Not bad considering we took the remnants home and it fed me and my gf for lunch today also. The food is always pretty reasonable and comes out fast and fresh. This place delivers what you would expect from a traditional Chinese restaurant and does it well. If your in the area give it a go.

I went were with a bunch of folks after some after work drinks turned into a bar hopping night… always a welcome surprise(well maybe not always… my recovery time isn’t what it used to be… damn you, time!!! Anyways, on to the restaurant. This place is in Northbridge right next to a few other Asian places. I had no idea where it was so, but at 2:30am in Perth, if anybody knows where to get food other than McDonalds or Fast Eddys, I’m game! We had 5 people in our party and we were seated right away at one of those round tables with the lazy susan. It gets better… I was with some Asians in an Asian restaurant… awesome dining experience ENGAGE! We ordered a bunch af stuff and it was all good if you are an adventurous eater. Two items that stick out in my mind. The first was the intestines. Fried and seasoned well. Very tasty. The second item was new for me. It was a whole chicken stuffed inside a pigs stomach. Ive never seen something like that before! It was like the Asian version of turducken. The pig stomach arrived and it was carved Peking duck style table side. Simply awesome! Everything was delicious and totally hit the spot. Added bonus, the bill was just $ 125 bucks for all of us. Cheap by Perth standards for dinner for 5. Stay sexy my friends!!!

Chinese food never tickles my fancy, but my friends always try to force me along. The City Garden Chinese Restaurant, whilst it is a typical Chinese restaurant, is a great place for a group of people to share dishes and catch up. The prices are reasonable and it is open until 4am, so you could chat away all night. I wasn’t overly impressed by their food but I blame that on my lack of interest in Chinese food because my friends said that it was really good. Overall sitting in this buzzing restaurant, chatting over a bunch of different dishes was a very enjoyable night.
