My family and I had a wonderful meal tonight; our waiter and one of the managers(?) gave us their best service. We did splurged a little with the crab and abalone, but we had to give the abalone a try. I have eaten my share of abalone but never an Australian 2−½ lb kind! The ginger scallions crab was delicious and perfectly prepared. The minor down side was the over salt on the veggies and clams. We will definitely come back on our next visit. I highly recommend West Lake if you are looking for good Chinese(sea)food.

Popped in for a pre-footy dinner. I got wonton soup and beef with vegetables. Maybe a tad pricey but it was a generous serve and good quality. Decent service, good menu. Good option in Chinatown.

Went there for yum cha it was just OK — good if you can’t get a table anywhere else… Don’t try any of the more experimental stuff where they mix scallops bacon and cheese.

Supper near midnight. Arrived from airport looking for bedtime snack. Restaurant was full of diners having seafood. We had savory porridge for $ 11 and stir fried snow pea leaves for $ 19 and beer for $ 6. Service was quick despite the large number of patrons. 1 am Monday morning when we left. Place still full.

Came here for a company yum cha lunch. We got mostly the standard yum cha dumplings, most of them tasted average. The beancurd dessert was quite smooth and nice though. The bill came out to be more than $ 30 per person, which was more than expected for the quantity that we had. My only conclusion was that the dumplings were overpriced.

This place isn’t bad if you’re just interested in yum cha. They have a very impressive selection of dumpling dishes available which are all decent, maybe not fantastic, but still pretty good and quite worth the price. Unfortunately, that’s where the praise ends; the service is pretty terrible, and the place is always totally packed on the weekends. Larger groups might find it a little difficult to get a table here; I suggest no more than 4 people during their busy lunch service. Do not go here for anything other than yum cha, because their pricy dinner menu is pretty average. Don’t order any«live» seafood from the front of the restaurant — not only is it extraordinarily expensive, the seafood is also half dead, and in the case of the abalone, completely dead. If you want Chinese food for dinner, please, I highly recommend you go elsewhere.

I don’t expect great or even good service at a Yum Cha place, but this was absolutely terrible. Our server got one of our dishes wrong, never brought out our last order, and failed to bring us water even though we asked 3 different times. The food was also pretty disappointing.

Great place to go for dinner, and one of the few restaurant in Chinatown that are open late every night. Customer service can be poor but food is the best in Chinatown. Try the crispy quail; delicious!

Okay. I still really like this place’s Yum Cha(refer to former review) for lunch, but when Yum Cha is over do not hit this place up for dinner. My friend and I were wandering around in the city fairly late at night looking for something that’s open besides McDonald’s and I figured«Oh hey the Yum Cha here was pretty good when we came the other day. Let’s try it out for dinner!» Unfortunately, that was a mistake on my part — that awful feeling when you suggest a place and it turns out to be bad, am I right? «Sorry for suggesting it… I didn’t mean to…» Beta as hell. Customer Service: The customer service was pretty good — they were really friendly and joked about how my white friend didn’t know how to speak Cantonese and how he should pay for my meal if I taught him Cantonese. Food: This is where it gets pretty bad. What we ordered: Roast Duck Rice and Spare Ribs w/Plum Sauce. Roast Duck Rice — It actually wasn’t half bad. Mediocre, but alright. It was essentially Peking Duck cut up into pieces over white rice with a bit of vegetables on the side. It wasn’t a horrible dish, but not worth the price of over 15 dollars. Spare Ribs w/Plum Sauce — Over 25 dollars or something like that and it was awful. They didn’t bother removing the fat or even trying to tenderise the meat. The sauce was flavourful and tangy, but the meat was just un-chewable. — I came out of that dinner completely satisfied, underwhelmed, and a bit disappointed. I’d return for the Yum Cha, but avoid the dinner.

West Lake is another yum cha restaurant on the China Town strip. I picked up a friend from the airport and it was the wee hours of the morning. 2am and where to find some asian cuisine on a weeknight? Westlake was one of the only few places still open(I honestly thought more venues would be open). We were seated straight away and orders were taken. I was quite flabbergasted as to how expensive to dishes actually were. Their neighbouring restaurants have meals for half or a third of the price. So with the price being higher, i assumed the quality of the cuisine would be much higher… Unfortunately this was not the case. For a $ 20 main, i was given a medium sized dish that was completely mediocre. The tofu and mixed vegetables were dry and tasteless. I would recommend somewhere else on the strip, the value for money chinatown restaurant you’ve been looking for is definitely not here.

Westlake is another of my regular yum cha joints, although it is more of a back up option for when Shark Fin House is full. Despite its second billing on my favourites list, Westlake is still pretty good. At times some of the yum cha dishes are a bit on the salty side(and, I suspect, full of MSG), but as long as you down enough green tea it’s okay. I’m a huge fan of the humble custard bun, I must say Westlake’s are some of the best in Chinatown. Those hacks at the China Bar chains need to take note of the colour — the insides of custard buns should be a light, natural yellow, not fluro green! Another win for Westlake is their willingness to serve big groups late into the night. Although the service here is never particularly warm, they have given my friends and I tables with an almost-smile as late as 1am and served us up mighty feasts. The late night atmosphere is always quite fun — not because of anything the restaurant does, but because those dining are usually in high spirits.
