I love Graffiti and Street Art and just art in general, so this was a special treat for me. If you find it you’re transported into a street art wonderland, with pieces covering the sides of the building from the ground to the sky. Simply amazing! One of the graffiti artists let me borrow a can to spray somewhere, but I did a terrible job. Haha. The only thing to keep in mind: if you happen to find this alley while people are creating new masterpieces, it will smell like spray paint. Fortunately, I didn’t smell the piss smell that Steve mentions. Just the spray paint. :)

The little brother of the famous Hosier Lane. It’s plastered with street art aka graffiti. It’s definitely a site to see and a bit nostalgic to walk through the colors of the throw ups and pieces. Well, it’s nostalgic if you could get pass the smell of piss. No, it seriously smells like piss. It’s like a bunch of drunk people came from Happy Hour and decided to urinate every foot of Union Lane from beginning to end. What’s crazy about Union Lane? There are no f*cks given here. I was there in broad daylight watching an artist add to the wall with his spray cans and fat tips. From my junior high days, we used to wait until night fall to go to work but he seriously did not give a f*ck. Thug Life. Much props. Anyway, it’s a must stop in Melbourne and right next to David Jones.

Fantastic street art. Located immediately next to David Jones, blink and you’ll miss it. The Melbourne Visitor Centre is right near Union Lane, in case you’re having trouble finding it. One long narrow alley way, plastered with graffiti. Probably 2nd best laneway in Melbourne(next to Hosier — also check out Croft and Caledonian)

I really want someone to compile a database of the best graffiti in Melbourne. I’m thinking maybe I should just do it myself, but I’m worried I’ll miss something. Union Lane is off Bourke St Mall(turn towards Flinders St). You would probably walk past it without realising, unless you happen to be looking for a quick exit away from all the busy bustling shoppers and the noisy pan-piping buskers. At night, however, it’s a different story. Melbourne is a safe city. I know that the news is reporting an increase in violence and whatnot, but when a fight can still make the news you know it’s a safe place. The point of this is to remind you that walking laneways at night will not end in a mugging or anything. It’s lit for chrissakes. Ignore the vague urine smell and walk along in that special quiet only a noisy city can ever achieve. The graffiti is in many many colours and walking the alley feels like walking through a kaleidoscope. It’s special.
