Astounding rudeness! I was amazed by the way staff and management talked down to us! They were foul. Have been here so many times but never again. Manager told us to find some«chi»!!! Total jerk.

Great bar, very cosy and the staff is so friendly and helpful. Perfect place for drinks after work. If you are a beer drinker this is not the best place for you, the bar just have 2 or 3 types of beers

I stumbled into this bar/cocktail lounge on a wet Friday night in search of a night cap at the end of a night of libations. We went to the too floor which was cosy and warm(just what was needed on a wet Melbourne night) with a welcoming feel to it. The bar tender that looked after us was on the ball and knew the cocktail list well. We ordered a delicious drink that was served warm(I can’t remember what it was, as I said it was the last drink of the night) and came to our table very quickly after ordering. I believe they do serve a small menu of bar snacks likes cheese plates etc however on this occasion we did not order anything. This place is great for a quiet night tucked away having some well prepared drinks or just ordering off the wine list. A great first date venue or catch up with a close friend or two. I would avoid coming here with bigger groups as it would ruin the atmosphere

On a cold and rainy Friday night, a few work peeps and I stumbled up the steep stairs to Old Gold Mountain. Visualise a darkly lit, ambience bar space with bartenders sporting asymmetrical hairstyles and global accents. That’s Old Gold Mountain for you. Perched on a bar stool in the dark corner, we sat for hours and drank cider, pure alcohol(you know who you are), wine and shared a cheese platter. Twas all very civilised and grown up. I like quiet little bars like this as they are perfect for a debrief session and just to chill after a wacky work week. Hey — love a little alliteration too #justsaying

Oh my… They make their own tonic! As far as a house G&T goes, this place knows how to do it well. The bar staff are some of Melbourne’s best, they know their stuff. The bar is well stocked for both cocktails and standard drinks and the atmosphere is perfect for chat with friends or a date. The two rooms are not great in size, but they are decorated with style and class. I would recommend this to anyone to try out… if you are at the top end of the city pop in.

Dim lights, a full bar, cool bartenders and in a great location; New Gold Mountain is a place that you should definitely check out if you find yourself in the Paris end of Bourke St. They do really good cocktails and they also have a broad range of scotch, which are fairly priced as well so I’m pretty happy with that. It’s a good bar to take a date or hang out with mates over a couple of drinks. I shall return!

I’d often heard about this place, or read about it, wanted to go and then promptly forgotten. So choosing an ideal time to visit here, turned out to be one steeped in debauchery, well maybe only a little, in this modest yet charming hide away. I’d almost call it a speak easy. It’s a nice hang out, with geometric roof hanging installation things. Its a bit of a late night hospo spot; particularly towards the early light of day. Having this being the chosen destination for late night fare well drinks, I can attest most of us were quite socially lubricated within our visit. Though, granted, not the kind where people disappear into dark corners of the bar for 20 minutes on end. As much as I’d like to encounter that! No ringing or dialing of telephones for me though, well for our group, but it was at about 2:30 we entered. Great selection of drinks at the bar, they have amaro montenegro, which is always a game winning play in my book! Various beers, other spirits, and god knows what else to drink, at the bar, most of which i can’t remember. Any who, I ended up staying till closing time, then it was pretty much a case of hug roulette, or just a case of fond farewells to the late stragglers, all of whom I hadn’t met before. They look after you here, but do pay them some respect. Remember, the bar tender is your friend.

Best cocktail I had in Melbourne. The bartenders were very helpful and created custom drinks for everyone in our party. If you give them a flavour, they’ll make someone completely unique.

An oldie but a goodie. The décor hasn’t changed forever and does not need to. Make sure to try the absinthe.

For somewhere with such striking décor, this place really lacks ambience. What you should know before visiting New Gold Mountain, is that this is not a buzzing bar where you can mingle or get a little bit raucous. It’s more of a place to bring a date or an intimate circle of friends, but even then it feels a little, how should I say, stiff? Cosy, dressed in red and divided in small sort-of-not-really-booths; the space is how I picture a high class brothel or a very plush speed dating circle, which whilst easy on the eyes, is not really conducive to my kind of Friday night fun. Some might say ‘cheap red’, I say ‘sexy red’. Some might call it ‘intimate’, I call it ‘boxed in’. Some might call it ‘serene’, I describe it as ‘dead air’. Go to New Gold Mountain by all means, just be sure of your intentions.

A bar where you have to call up from a phone on the street to be let in? Really Melbourne? This is what you’re doing now? Cough-wanker-cough. I went begrudgingly after finding that fact out from a friend who wanted to go, and then we stood at the phone laughing for about ten minutes because we felt like IDIOTS having to ask to be let up. Sucked it up, they opened the door and we walked up the stairs to the bar, just above Double Happiness, and found a table under sea of material ruffles. Old champagne bottles surrounded us along the wall and we had the space to ourselves(there are a few rooms) so it felt very private — I guess the secretive, private vibe is what they’re going for. It’s table service from a menu — I ordered some kind of expensive beer, I can’t remember what it was, and my friend had a gin. Not cheap, and we left straight after — overall I think my initial thoughts were confirmed.

When the ceiling could just as easily act as the floor, you know you’re in one of the hottest new spots in Melbourne. I speak of course about the elusive single door, marked only by the parts of a bicycle, that leads up two flights of stairs to a cramped bar and lounge. Above these is the area reserved for groups, monitored by the harshest of all bouncers: the hot girl in heels. Thankfully we weren’t rejected but I’m not sure to which criteria we adhered. However, we did later confront many a quarrel about supposedly sneaking people into the room. We had quite a circular argument about how many people were in the room. We counted 9, she counted 11. It’s hard to imagine how far that argument could go but it managed to span several minutes. Eventually she tired and we were left to our own devices. New Gold Mountain seems like the kind of place you’d want to take your closest friends, or even some clients you’re trying very hard to impress. Decorated with deep reds and lit for the most intimate of relationships, I’d be careful about who you do choose to take. Smart design features non-obtrusively divide the space into separate rooms to be enjoyed by a variety of ages, from the businessmen to the housewives and even the newly-18s. I didn’t spend too much time in the downstairs area but I feel it’s a more casual space to hang, and fortunately it isn’t monitored by math-challenged bouncers.

Stairs and Cocktails. That’s what you need to know about New Gold Mountain, a dire combination indeed. New Gold Mountain has a few levels where you can relax by the bar or head to a more private section. The top floor decorated with red wood booths and a tiny little bar, is particularly intimate. The bar staff are excellent and prepared to make you something fairly standard(brilliant martinis), or wow you with interesting flavours — try a licorice and coffee icy cocktail, it goes down a treat. The place can get fairly busy, but because its tucked down a little alley and the stairs separate out the levels its doubtful you’ll have to queue to get something to drink. The food is okay. It doesn’t measure up to the cocktails, you may be better off having a few drinks and making your way to Little Bourke Street. Just remember the stairs. They will hamper your efforts if you’ve had one too many. Keep it in mind because the staircase is extensive — it matches the cocktail menu. Once you’ve mastered them you’ll be fine.
