This place has queues all the time. The fried chicken is fine as is the lamb curry. Watching the freshly made tori flying around is fun. But I think there is better Malaysian around — next door even!

This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne(I have a mouth full as I’m writing this so I’m in ecstatic mode)! Food is absolutely delicious, the service is fast, the portions are large and it is so cheap! Start with the rotis with dips, try the satay chicken skewers(best satay I’ve ever had) and top it off with the national dish of Malaysia, nasi lamak. It’s coconut rice with anchovies, chili sauce, veggies and make sure to add a side of curry chicken. Heaven on a plate! If you have any room left(not likely) finish with the sweet roti cone with a side of ice cream. Gets busy so be ready for a queue at prime times.

Owners jacking up the prices twice in short succession. I love your roti canai, but $ 7 now? I’ve taken my business elsewhere in several occasions now already. I hope it’s going towards better pay for the hardworking staff at the restaurant and not to fatten your margins.

Great Malaysian food. Good vegetarian options(remember to mention no shrimp paste if vegetarian). Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

best malaysian restaurant ever! everyting is so authentic, you can order anything here and would not go wrong! the line is huge if you go at regular hours, but if you don’t mind going at 11:30 for lunch or 5pm for dinner, there’s no wait

For maximizing value and quality, Mamak is a great bet. The food is amazing and as one of my companions put it, «exactly the right amount of spice.» The price is also excellent, especially at lunch when most of the menu is at a decent discount. The roti is impressive, but the butter roti was a little disappointing. Try the fish curry if you want a little spice and the Me Goreng is pretty good as well. Try the refreshing lime drinks on a hot day or the ginger tea. At lunch there may be a line, but it is pretty big inside and they move people through efficiently, so you probably won’t have to wait too long. I’ll be back.

Incredible food, nice authentic Malaysian cuisine and great drinks offered here. However the place is quite tacky and is super packed. One thing I hate is how stuffy it feels in here. But the food is worth a try and it’s quite cheap too. The staffs here are okay I suppose, there’s no problem. It’s not cosy at all, but it’s good for a cheeky trip.

This place was everything I dreamed of and more! Where do I begin… with the roti, of course! :) Their signature roti canai is everything roti should be. Fluffy and light with three dipping sauces. It was divine! Thanks to the couple next to us ordering some mouth watering dishes, we decided to try two of them, the stir fried long beans and mee goreng(thicker noodles). The noodles were so flavourful with heaps of egg, fishcake, prawns, and veggies. The long beans had loads of spice without too much heat. Delicious! Next we tried the spicy lamb curry. Again, not super spicy but tender and juicy. The broth it bathed it was good enough to drink from the bowl(although I resisted). Lastly the friendly couple left us each a piece of the fried chicken to sample. Wow, even more wonderful tenderness and flavour. It was hard to stop eating! 3 dishes + the roti is more than enough for two hungry people, but we could not resist sampling it all. I also ordered an iced milk tea which went down very quickly and was so refreshing with the meal. My friend said this was the best Malaysian food he has had, beating the US and Canada. A big win for Melbourne! I couldn’t agree more, and don’t worry, I will be back soon.

If you miss Malaysia this is the restaurant you need to eat at. Everytime i miss Kuala lumpur and my friends there, I go and eat here. It’s the closest thing to the foods i’ve eaten in Malaysia. Beef and chicken satay sticks that come with a thick peanut sauce is to die for. Hits that craving spot nicely. My favourite is the rojak salad and i get it everytime i come here. Highly recommend this place if you’re malaysian and miss home

Having been a fan of the Sydney store for a while now I joined the throngs of Melbournians loosing their collective minds about a Melbourne based Mamak! They have been open here for a while now and thankfully the lines have died down a lot from what they once were. Still be prepared to wait a substantial amount of time on a Friday or Saturday night! It goes without saying that they do one of the best roti I have ever had. Soft, fresh, just enough crisp to give it some texture and served with delicious dipping sauces. I love the egg roti the most and can happily munch on them all day long. The rest of the menu features all the classic Malaysian foods you would expect here. Every dish is brought out very fast and nicely presented. The flavours are usually quite mild rather than the knock you out spices you would be used to if you have this type of food in it’s country of origin. Feel free to ask the staff to kick it up a notch with some chilli if you are a fan of the spice like me. The prices are quite affordable which in my mind means I want to order all the more food and feast on everything(which I usually do). Mamak is not a great place for a date as it can get a little messy and it’s not exactly romantic. This delicious restaurant is great for groups of friends or a fast dinner or lunch with colleagues. Do your self a favour and go eat their roti now!

Weather you’re craving a curry, satay or asain style salad, you’ll find what your looking for here. And make sure you get some roti. Any type, it doesn’t matter. They are fluffy, soft, plain or stuffed, you’ll wanna jam those little puppies in your gob. I shared the egg and onion roti, chicken curry, and a salad(can’t remember the name). As mentioned, the roti was amazing. The chicken curry was quite traditional. Seved with potatoes and enough sauce to for your roti(or rice). It wasn’t quite as hot as I like it, but that’s just personal taste. As for the salad, it was everything you’d expect. Clean, crisp flavours that are both tasty and refreshing. I’ll be back to sample more of the very reasonably priced menu and more importantly the amazing roti.

Very nice Malaysian restaurant, punchy Malay flavours in the curry, the sambal prawns were not holding anything back either. The roti was excellent though rice was slightly hard. Service was spot on. The venue did get exceedingly loud at times due to some weird tunnel effect.

Super tasty food, and extremely friendly staff. We had plain Roti, chicken satay, mee goreng, and another salad plate i cant remember the name of. Everything was crazy yummy, really loved the food. Also had a dessert roti at the end to share, which was interesting but could’ve gone without. Excellent food here. BYO. Though its not a fancy dining type place, more casual supertasty munch before you head somewhere else. I’ll def return though as food and service were amazing. Apparently its open late too.

I’m a newcomer to Mamak & feel like I’ve been missing out. I could eat the roti quite literally until it comes out of my ears it is so good & I would return to just eat purely that. Having said that the other food is equally delicious & flavoursome. I called in without a booking on a fairly busy night, we were seated promptly & the service was very efficient. Generous sized portions of food but so tasty I easily finished my plate of Nasi Goreng. The dishes are all reasonably priced & great value. If you’re looking for Malaysian food then you simply have to try Mamak :)

I’ve been here twice and absolutely love it. The food is good(who doesn’t like curry?), it’s conveniently located in the CBD and it’s cheap as well so really… What’s not to like about it? I’ve had 3 of their roti — the roti telur, roti planta(my favourite) and the roti bawang, all of which were really nice. I’ve also had their kari ayam and ikan, and they were both really good. For dessert, we shared the roti kaya and ais kacang. Again, no complaints whatsoever. The guys there are really friendly and you can expect your food to arrive at your table very quickly no matter how busy they are, which is always a plus. If you like this type of cuisine and are after a cheap meal, then give Mamak a shot.

Mamak is one of the best places to eat in Melbourne! The food is to die for and the restaurant is quite large so you don’t have to worry about a wait. Having heard from Unilocalers and friends, the roti is a must try! I ordered the roti canai — the original roti served with a couple curry dips and sambal. This roti really is nothing short of perfection! It’s so flakey and buttery. It reminded me of a crêpe, but better. I also ordered the Nasi Goreng, a spicy stir fry dish with shrimp. This is probably the best Malaysian rice dish I have ever had. Moderately spicy, but not over the top. The portion was also very large so I walked out with half of my dinner to go. I hope to go back soon!

I had the roti canai and the half dozen chicken satay – both were exceptional. The roti was was crispy and fluffy and came to the table warm with a good amount of curry dips and a delicious sambal sauce. I wish I didn’t share! The chicken satay was outstanding – you can smell the char as it reaches your table. It was perfectly grilled. And the sweet and spicy peanut sauce that comes with it will haunt me until I can have it again! To top it off, I had an iced milo to accompany the meal… mmmm. I’d love to come back and try a few other things on the menu too. Afterwards, I watched through the window from outside the roti being made. It’s obvious they are skilled and take good care to deliver a level of quality. I saw them throw out a roti after setting it on the plate because they decided it didn’t meet their standards!(Though I wished that I still could’ve eaten it!) Try out Mamak, whether for a snack or meal, it won’t disappoint.

YES. MAMAKINMELBOURNE. I first tried Mamak in Sydney three years ago and had such a lovely and memorable experience there. When I realized it was in Melbourne. well I had to go straight away! The Roti Canai is fantastic. Best Roti I’ve had in Melbourne. The dipping sauce is fantastic. The satay chicken is the best satay I’ve had in Melbourne as well. The peanut dipping sauce is delicious and the skewers are a bit smaller than at some other places, but the meat is tender, sweet, and succulent. Best. We loved the chicken curry. It was a bit spicy but completely hit the spot. The chicken was so flavorful and delicious, I could have eaten this all day. Finally we got the kangkung belacan, which is morning glory veggies in a spicy shrimp paste sauce. These are my favorite veggies in the whole world, and Mamak does it so much justice. I can’t rave enough about how good the food here is. The menu seems a bit more limited than the one in Sydney, but in a way I am thankful for the lack of choices as my belly would not be able to handle it! Can’t wait to come back to try the sweet rotis!

The real reason you come here is for the roti canai. It’s made quick smart, lands on the the table steaming hot and is accompanied by two kinds of dhal of varying spice levels and a little splodge of sambal to really get your tastebuds going. Sure, go ahead and order other dishes from the menu like the satay, the nasi lemak and the chicken curry. They’re good, but don’t hit the same levels of sublime that you get with the roti. Pro tip: Kids love watching the roti being made in the front window, and will happily scoff a plate on their own(leaving the dhal) if you let them.

Delicious roti, fragrant curries, love the teh tarik(or teh ais on a hot day) — great to balance a spicy sambal! Fried chicken is ok, nothing to write home about but it actually just makes valuable belly space for other amazing goodies :) Maggi goren is surprisingly delicious — something about the texture of 2 minute noodles slathered in mee goren sauce :) Satays also worthwhile if you’ve got room on the table /belly! No booze here — but the Korean grocery store across the street has a great array of delightful Korean + Japanese beers, sake, sojus so consider a chaser :)
