Some of the worst sushi rolls I have ever had! The Volcano Roll is nothing more than out of the can Albacore Tuna with mildly spicy mayonnaise. It was basically a tuna salad sushi roll. The Spicy Tuna Roll With Avocado was not spicy and only included a few very small pieces of tuna, not at all in proportion to the rest of the ingredients(one small sliver of avocado, cucumber and yellow pepper). On the topic of proportions and portions the cut roll pieces are way too large to comfortably put them in your mouth, requiring you to awkwardly try to take a bite of the roll piece, resulting in the roll piece falling apart. The rest of their menu may be ok, which I didn’t try, but I would stay clear of the sushi rolls!

I rate this place for good, reasonably priced Japanese food. It is always vibrant but there’s never a need to wait for a table, partly due to it being very large inside. Upstairs is particularly good for groups and they host at lest one MeetUp here each week. The menu is extensive as compared to other Japanese places in town, and everything I’ve had had been quite authentic(when compared to food eaten in Japan). Friendly and prompt service too.

Felt like a bite of Japanese food tonight and trying to decide between all the Japanese restaurants, I stumbled in here. Everything we ordered was superb! We may have over ordered a tad but had no regrets! In particular I would highly recommend the beef ribs. Definitely planning another visit here soon. Very keen to try the green tea ice cream!

Not a huge fan of Japanese food however i enjoyed my time here. Started off with a drink at the bar and then went to our table. the place looked quite a bit larger than it did from the street so it was good that it wasn’t too crowded. We had a large group and it was a little slow to order and get our drinks and food although admittedly they were a bit busy. The waiters were helpful in making suggestions and when the food arrived it was a good mix of selections and enjoyed most of the food although i’m not over adventurous usually. Some of the more regular eaters of Japanese were also impressed with the food. i’d be back here if i was considering Japanese food.

Izakaya Chuji, is né of those places in Melbourne you may end up passing several times before you go in. Usually very popular and busy, this narrow Japanese restaurant makes full use of it’s space; there’s a sushi counter down back. The menu has a large selection of sharing style starters in two sections, for instance you can get fried or steamed gyoza, plus a whole host of other tasty snacks. Orion tap beer $ 9400ml, is a good selection. On the occasion I went they had a super tasty beef curry special with udon noodles. Yummariffic! Elsewise, most items/food on the menu are pretty pleasing. Sake, beer, shochu and Umeshu also available.

Not normally one for Japanese. In fact, I’m often that person that says«I don’t really do Japanese.. can we go somewhere else». I was completely satisfied and content with everything we ordered. Grilled eggplant was done perfectly, Miso soup was also fantastic. Soft shell crab was a little pily and soggy and although the tables were a tad sticky, everything else was excellent. Next time someone suggests Japanese, I’ll be suggesting here.

We ordered eight dishes between four people. The food was amazing. To top it off the service was fantastic. They were polite and checked in on us a few times. The vibe was comfy. The type of place that makes you forget how much you spend.

Nice spot away from worst of crowds. At lunch you can choose your own bento box items, a nifty idea! Sashimi portions were generous and price was reasonable. Check it out!

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get to Izakaya Chuji! What a great little spot. The eggplant with miso sauce is the sexiest thing I’ve put in my mouth all month — it’s silky and slippery, savoury and sweet all at once. I was sad I had to share it with three friends and considered trading their portion for my skewered beef with terriyaki, but then that was delicious too! It has a fabulous atmosphere perfect for a date or a catch up with friends over a bottle of sake and a bowl of edamame(which are really good!). I’m adding this to my list of regular mid-week haunts. Love it.

I love this place. I loved it way back in 2000 – 2003 and I love it again since I’ve been back to Melbourne. This time however, there is an awesome Izakaya/bar attached if you feel like partaking from the extensive sake menu or trying a Japanese microbrew. You can also eat at the bar. Great for a date, after work or before going out. The restaurant side hasn’t changed much in the past 10 years from what I can tell except for the table layout. It’s still casual and busy. But the best part of course, is that all the food you order, tastes just like you want it to. Fresh and delicious.

I gotta agree with Hope M. — this place rocks. Great place to go to unwind with quality Japanese food and a few bottles of Sake down at the Sashimi bar out back. Added bonus of the bar out back is that you get to watch the kitchen at work — amazing stuff

Izakaya Chuji is a little gem! Izakaya-style dining, which is basically Japanese tapas, is currently in vogue in Melbourne thanks to the Den, but Chuji has been kicking along steadily for more than 20 years regardless of fashion. Watching the chefs at the open kitchen in Izakaya Chuji is truly inspiring — they are super-fast and know how to handle a sharp knife. The food is traditional, fresh and beautifully presented. Don’t miss the ika butter, which is squid cooked in butter. It literally melts in your mouth. These are the guys that own Nihonshu Sake bar on Londsdale, so Izakaya Chuji has a pretty impressive range of beverages. They do both warm and cold sake, beers and there’s a big range of whisky. Izakaya Chuji can get pretty loud when it’s pumping, but that’s part of the fun — highly recommended!
