Unfortunately not possible to give no stars… else would… was generally a disappointment(the spring rolls didn’t come with the standard vietnamese accoutrements of lettuce and fresh herbs; the duck was dry/overcooked; when we asked for a bed of green vegetables rather than lettuce and bean sprouts the additional charge(with other places usually no extra charge is the norm) was excessive).but the real reason for 1(should be 0) stars is that the salt and pepper squid was actually inedible without stripping said squid of coating.(the squid itself was well cooked but the coating was pure salt.)…whether a vietnamese restaurant or the local pub over the years have experienced many variations of S&P squid… but this was the only time in my experience that it was actually inedible in it’s presented form. Couldn’t even ignore that as the wine we ordered(a $ 34 bottle so no expectations but should be at least drinkable) was almost as unpalatable as the squid. Have often drove past this place and thought worth a try — never again; profoundly disappointed.

It was my dad’s birthday dinner and once again — I was the one in charge of arranging dinner plans and making reservations. From a family of discerning tastebuds — particularly with asian food, I had various mixed reaction from my crew when I informed them dinner was at My Tho 7:30 Sunday night. First — most people got confused with the other My Tho on Hanson Road, when I reassured them it was on Port Road, Hindmarsh I drew a few blank looks. To set the record straight, the My Tho Restaurant at Hanson Road has closed and we now have My Tho City at a great new location at 199 Port Road, Hindmarsh. Just on the outskirts of the city — location was a big tick in my books. So anyway — I choose My Tho City because I had the Entertainment voucher and we were looking for a Vietnamese restaurant. They had also won Best Vietnamese restaurant in the recent Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards so I had to check it out. We ordered a good mixture of food, starting with quails which was marinated in a tasty, spicy sauce. We rolled up our sleeves to get hands on with making our own cold rolls with port meat balls and prawn meat was a tasty starter. We shared a plate of the combination and beef salad which had crunchy, fresh vegetables and good amount of seasoning. The combination hot pot was massive and flavoursome and the seafood steamboat was piled with big juicy prawns, squid and vegetables in a tasty broth. Service was prompt and efficient, the owner was a happy, friendly man who seemed to genuinely enjoy his job. Overall great dinner with great company, food was good, this place is worth a visit.

Great service, great food, and they are a perfect choice if you’re going to a gig at the Gov or Entertainment Centre, as they’ll be quick for you. Check out My Tho on Hanson Road too, better atmosphere

Eating at My Tho was a bit of a mess. It’s a good looking spot, classier than a few other Vietnamese joints, but not over the top. There’s outdoor and indoor seating, and it has a lot of potential. The menu is where things start to go downhill. Despite being a Vietnamese restaurant, the majority of the menu seems very Chinese inspired. Granted the two cuisines have their similarities, but there are some great Vietnamese dishes that are nowhere to be seen. There is a ‘Magnificent Authentic Vietnamese Dishes’ section of the menu, and I can’t help but feel that in a Vietnamese restaurant this should involve more than just R.Y.O cold rolls. Service is also a bit of a jumble. Two Heinekens came out instead of two fresh lemon juices, and when the second round came out the taste of the two lemon juices was completely different(to the point of being undrinkable). Dishes meant for another table were also brought by mistake, but at least in the end we got all out food. Out water glasses were removed from the table so someone could get ice, only to be brought back by someone else without any ice to be seen. While the wait staff seemed utterly confused, they were all still polite and attentive. The other bonus is that their R.Y.O. cold rolls are delicious, even if the amount of wrappers is a little inconsistant. The salad was a disappointment, it was missing that perfect balance of sweet, salty, and spicy that Asian salads do so well, but all round the food was still tasty. They seem like faults you’d expect in a new restaurant still finding its feat, but My Tho City has been open for years. Whatever the case they probably have to step up their game a little, because there are too many other Vietnamese restaurants to choose from.
