After reading much hype about Two Sticks famous Signature Dish — the Yunnan Signature Rice Noodle Soup($ 12.80) — for the past couple of years, I was delighted to be able to get a seat at its recently opened space in Quay Street in Sydney’s Chinatown. Already by noon the place was nearing capacity. The Yunnan Signature Rice Noodle Soup comes out in a large stone mini hotpot and the server warns that it is extremely hot. Inside are strands of beef and chicken; bean curd sheets; chives; bean sprouts and rice noodle simmering in a near-boiling chicken broth. The server adds quail egg to the mix and you a free to add fresh chili and pickled vegetables. It’s a hearty dish but really lacked depth of flavour. Much prefer a Vietnamese chicken phở which is far more flavoursome.

This is the second branch to two sticks. I actually prefer this one more as it’s slightly bigger and because it’s more enclosed, the A/C actually works better, and there’s not much of a lineup here. The A/C actually helps when you’re enjoying a delicious bowl of noodle soup in summer. I always go for menu item number #1 here, and sometimes going for the spicy pork ear as a side. Prices are relatively inexpensive, but be careful that this place is cash only.

Felt like some soup noodles and was walking by Two Sticks underneath the new shiny Quay apartments so walked right in as there was no queue. The George Street branch always seems to have a queue so this was perfect. I ordered the house specialty #1 which is the noodles in the clay pot. The broth is nice and not too heavy and there was a decent serving of vermicelli and tofu. There were a few cuts of beef that are put into your pot when it arrives at your table. I also ordered a side serving of pigs ears in chilli and sesame — which was tongue numbing due to the use of sichuan peppers. Overall — it was an average meal, almost like a comforting home cooked soup noodle type of night.
