This is a great alternative for a cruisy café. Service, staff, coffee and food are consistently satisfying. I do not get to go there as often as I should in order to do the friend’s catch up or read the paper but every time I do I am on my coffee high and full stomach. If you do trek out to Le Flaneur and you are not up for a big meal grab one of the danishes quick before they are sold out — you will not regret that decision. Just bare in mine that is on quite a busy street so parking can be tricky — but there are two tram lines 30 seconds away from its location.

A recent lunch at Le Flaneur was a pleasant experience. Whilst the name confuses me slightly, their choice of coffee did not! The Seven Seeds blend was as distinctive as usual, whilst there were a number of single origins available I’m very keen to try at a later date. For one of the few times in ages I actually ordered an ‘smashed avo’, unfourtunately as the choices seemed rather limited for lunch(the menu seems rather breakfast focused). I ordered it with some smoked salmon, which was a seriously delicious addition, and the use of capers was a unique touch which worked very well! ‘Tucked’ away on the corner of Church St and Victoria St, it’s one of those cafes easy to miss when you’re driving by. It is simply designed, but has a very comfortable feel. Definitely a place to go on a Saturday or Sunday morning, but make sure you book ahead as I reckon it would get very busy!

A pleasant and unexpected surprise for breakfast. I didn’t know what to think when I walked it, but the place was bustling with a large group of brunchers around the large communal table, home to an impressive cold drip. There were 2 single origins on offer, but the Colombian was clearly supreme. A nice selection of breakfast on offer, I had the smashed avocado, which had a generous hit of goats cheese and lemon throughout it, plus 2 poached eggs. Quite lovely. The staff were lovely and incredibly attentive, which just rounded the experience out. There were a couple of free tables when we left, so clearly this is an unappreciated gem in Hawthorn. You should fix that, on your way.

Had a lovely lunch and my first cold drip coffee here today. Both were delicious. Cute atmosphere, gorgeous food presentation, obviously quality ingredients. Not sure I would want to eat here if I was starving: definitely a quality not quantity kind of place. Warning: DONOTCOMEHERE if you have difficulty coping with being served by a model-gorgeous man who say things like«I made the beetroot terrine yesterday, so it should be just perfect today» in a charming French accent. My friend and I could barely look at him without peeing our pants, but we attempted to act our age. I am not a coffee geek(at all) but was curious about the various coffees and the waiter managed to mostly disguise his horror when I implied that I might put milk in the cold drip. My friend ordered her typical strong-soy-decaf and he promised to «try». So, while clearly taking their coffee seriously, they will cater to the masses. I was a bit disappointed there were no food specials on the board(except for a dessert). The menu isn’t terribly varied but what we had was yummy. Was surprisingly quiet for a Friday lunch. I made a booking but it was totally unnecessary.

What i love about Flaneur is the casual surrounding well spaced tables and always friendly staff. If only every café were bold enough to match the passion for excellence in their coffee with exemplary food. The ever changing menu surprises and delights every time, bold short and oh so delicious. Flavours are delicate, presentation of the dishes is better than most restaurants in the area, the whimsical use of fresh herbs, flowers and delicately cut vegetables makes every dish a full sensory delight. Tony’s coffee is without fault, the depth of flavour he can extract from his pride and joy Hydra makes stopping for a quick re-charge well worth the effort. We love the quinoa porridge and were pleasantly surprised at its presentation, the team have replaced it now with equally delicious delights and will continue to achieve the highest standard of food i have seen in a café for a long time. Oh and finally the Lemon Tart, i’m not going to spoil the surprise. Order one and you will see.

Another quality coffee outpost in the Eastern suburbs. Occupying part of the Ground level of what used to be known as the Beehive Hotel, Le Flâneur serves a range of single origin beans, using syphon, pour over, and an espresso processes, as well as excellent café food. The sandwich and cake offerings are pretty great too. Also — try their cooked breakfast(the bacon is superb). The interior décor and fitout is modern, with some subtle tributes to the original venue(the front windows). Overall a quality venue and well worth a visit if you’re nearby.

How could you not fall in love with this place? It’s bright and whimsical, there’s a tree growing out of the communal table, the staff are clean faced and cheerful, the menu is printed on bright sunny yellow card… Not to mention that the bircher muesli has rosewater, pomegranate and walnuts scattered on top, a boiled egg is served with a perfectly squidgy centre, the baguettes(stuffed with all sorts of Frenchy things) come from Noisette, the macarons by Josephine and the coffee… well. That needs a paragraph of its own. Le Flâneur has an intense focus on the beloved bean. Tony the barista has been gifted with a beautiful workstation — it’s big and features all manner of contraptions, like various cold drip filters(for coffee and tea), a number of pour-over sets, infra-red syphon and other bits and bobs that coffee geeks like me love to ogle. It’s beautifully presented and in many ways acts as a centerpiece for the café — allowing customers to be included in the process in a way that isn’t intimidating or wanky. Cold drip is extracted quite long and served in a glass jug on a wooden tray, along with a glass of ice and little jugs of brown sugar syrup and milk. I’m a straight up black with no sugar kind of girl, but I imagine I may eventually be tempted to pour the contents in with my coffee to see what it tastes like. That’s the thing with this place — for some reason you feel safe trying something you normally wouldn’t. It’s friendly and comforting, the staff immediately feeling like friends. The space is like the home you always dreamed of, and the food just like your Mum would make… if she were French, and oh so very chic.
