Every time I come to Hahndorf, I seem to put on a bit of weight. I think it might have something to do with the beautiful restaurants, the amazing cafes, the chocolate shops, and of course, Humbugs. Humbugs is where I stop and buy boiled lollies by the kilogram, because they remind me of the times I spent with my grandparents as a child, and the constant supply of these delicious sugary treats. There’s good local stuff here, and there’s a bit of imported stuff which I don’t often worry about. Pretty much everything is good, though.

Humbugs is a place I love and I hate. I love it because it’s full of sugary goodness, old style lollies, boiled lollies(which I used to live on as a kid). I hate Humbugs of the same reason. It’s the type of shop where no matter how many times I tell myself I’m only going in to look, I will come out with bagfuls of calories I really don’t need. But seriously, if your into sweets and lollies, Hahndorf is the place to go, and you can’t go past this place.

There is something comforting about old school lolly shops. You feel like a little kid again, running around filling your arms up with ridiculous amounts of sugary goodness. Humbugs is one of those places that gives you the warm fuzzies. They have every lolly you could imagine and more. Remember those weird horrible tasting lollies that looked like fruit, I bought some, and giant gobstoppers that are still bigger than your head. I don’t understand these– how on earth are you meant to get it small enough to fit into your mouth?! However, I still bought it and hoped for the best(no progress has been made). I like the fact that these shops now stock weird American lollies. These lolly shops are some of the only places in Adelaide where you can buy Dr Pepper, Pop Tarts and other chocolates, such as Hershey Bars. I grew up on Pop Tarts, hence I still crave them and drive to a lolly shop to get my fix. I must admit the flavours that exist now are so bizarre– ice-cream sandwich, bubblegum? What on earth happened to plain chocolate and strawberry. Oh well, there is still nothing as satisfying for breakfast as a Pop Tart.

Did you know I can draw a mouth around my belly button and make it talk? I call him Antonio and he likes singing show tunes! Antonio lives today because of wonderful shops like Humbugs and all of the stupidly fattening lollies that they sell! Humbugs is your typical old fashioned sweet shop, with imported bars and pops from the US, loose candies and old favourites. Each time I head in I grab myself a super sized jaw breaker. The last time I forgot I had started one and I only found it recently in the front pouch of a brief case. Is it wrong that I didn’t hesitate to cram that sucker straight back into my mouth? Nah… course not! By the way, the fudge is really good, but there is a number of places in Hahndorf that also make their own. Sample them all and see which you like the best(Humbugs is the cheapest).
