Yakumi is not the place to pop into for a cheap Friday night eat, but if it’s quality food, excellent service and an inviting atmosphere you’re after then this is the place for you! The restaurant has been around for a number of years, but seems to be not as well known as other restaurants on Jetty Road — perhaps as it’s further away from the beach than most. We started off with the gyoza — always a go to dish for me. The gyoza at Yakumi were some of the best I’ve ever had — soft and pillowly, lightly fried, beautifully folded and paired with a delicious citrus dipping sauce. I would have been happy to just eat plate after plate! My partner and I then opted to share two main options. Looking back now, one and another entrée would have been plenty — however we weren’t too sure of portion sizes. We shared the Cod and the Green Tea Smoked Salmon. It’s hard to pick a favourite — both were impeccably cooked, melting in our mouths. The apple and potato salad that accompanied the salmon was a beautiful compliment, balancing the dish with both texture and flavour. We chose the black sesame ice cream for dessert, until the waitress kindly offered to make a plate so we could sample both that and the Green Tea ice cream. Black sesame was the favourite hands down, with a sweet berry sauce complimenting nicely. The drinks menu also had a nice selection to suit all tastes. It’s very rare that I review a restaurant, but I couldn’t walk away from Yakumi without giving them the recognition they deserve. Service was impeccable and the food incredible. We’ll be back for sure!

This has to be my favourite Japanese Restaurant. It is also one of the smallest but don’t let that put you off, because, as someone once told me, good things come in small packages and Yakumi is certainly an example of this. The Restaurant is modern and feels joyously intimate as though you are eating in someone’s home. It is stylish and well laid out to make the best use of the space. Peter is the owner and chef and he manages to create masterpieces in the smallest of kitchens. He is exacting about freshness and this is reflected in the food. I have been here many times and the food is undoubtedly excellent. I especially love the crab dumplings in Sake sauce. Just a word of warning for people on a budget, there is a minimum food charge which used to be $ 25 but I believe it may have increased to around $ 35. It certainly isn’t a cheap night out but it is worth the money for a special occasion or just a treat!
