My mother and I could not decide where to eat for lunch and since the Mexican Kitchen has been in Freo for so long and we’d never tried it, we decided to stop by. My mother is an incredibly fussy, vegetarian diner however she was excited to try a trio of dips with corn chips(guacamole, salsa and chilli con queso). All 3 were very tasty and she was extremely pleased. I ordered fish tacos which I thought were really good, the cabbage turned everything purple but that was okay! The food came out fairly fast, and the staff members were very friendly(the waitress didn’t bat an eye at my mother’s terrible pronunciations!). I would definitely recommend this place and would come again.

We hadn’t decided where to go and it was late-ish on a Sunday night(8:30) We managed to get a table just as the kitchen was closing. The staff were lovely and our meals came quickely and were very reasonably priced.

Being American, I chose to do what Americans do best while on holiday… dine on Mexican food. This restaurant was conveniently located on the Cappuccino Strip in Fremantle and had plenty of tables for dinner. When my partner and I arrived, most of the tables were full and this is usually a good sign for having good food. We chose to sit outside as it was a lovely fall evening and most people outside seemed to be having a grand time. Once seated, we ordered our food. I went with the enchiladas and my partner went with the chicken tacos. I wasn’t too happy with my meal. The enchiladas were bland and overly sauced. The chicken tacos on the other hand were awesome. My partner even commented that they might have been the best chicken tacos she has had in her lifetime. Editor’s Note: She has probably only had about three chicken tacos throughout said lifetime. Overall, the atmosphere was right, the price was right, and the food was average. I would recommend this place for a casual night of dining in Fremantle. Set your expectations below average and you will have a blast.

Came here on a Friday night, a few weeks before Christmas at around 8:30pm. Had a round of drinks and ordered food. Cocktails were great. Food had absolutely no spice and is very diluted for the aussie pallet(bland). Midway through dinner, at around 8:50pm we tried to get one of the 4 girls working upstairs(standing around ignoring everyone) attention so we could buy another round of drinks only to be told bluntly ‘bars shut’. There was no ‘last call’ and even though there were 4 of them standing round doing literally nothing but talk and chain smoke, they couldn’t be bothered making another $ 30+ for the business. Another case of poor service in perth, coupled with bland food means i wouldn’t recommend this place.

Tasteless slop. Pretty much all I can say about what was served up tonight. Thank god for the margaritas. Between three of us, two orders of enchiladas and a quesadilla. The enchiladas were a sea of goop with the texture of pre chewed porridge. The quesadilla was not much better, with a tasteless guacamole that was slightly sweet. What the??? No spice to speak of in any of the dishes. We were not even asked how we would like the heat. Desperate I asked for some hot sauce, but alas 10 minutes later when it finally arrived, it was a battle lost and it did nothing to recover the terrible food. So to recap, the highlights — margaritas good, enchiladas gooey, quesadilla’s confusing, But the refried beans on the side was actually nice. Won’t be back until it’s under new management. I’m from the US and lived much of my life in California, so I have pretty high standards for Mexican food. I was super excited to see that they had a nopales(cacuts) burrito on the menu! It was flavorful, authentic, and hearty… yum! I also loved that you can sit outside on south terrace — a great spot for people-watching! The service was also lovely. Not overly romantic or special décor, but a fun, casual spot for a tasty meal. Definitely preferable to Zapatas!

The rating exchange rate is in effect. This would be 3 stars«okay» if in the US, but in our quest to find good Mexican food in WA, I have to say that from what i’ve been able to find, it’s really pretty good. It ticks the boxes with oozy-cheezy goodness, good rice and beans, and overall good food. The only complaints I’d have to have(hence the 1 star off) is the frozen margaritas. Pretty much no lime flavour and just like frozen ice. Go for the«over rocks» ones(which will go way too fast) or a beer. There are better margaritas in Perth, but not better authentic homestyle /fatten-you-up Mexican food.

The service was average although the bar waiter was very knowledgable referencing all the types of tequila available and recommending the best(although not the most expensive), food is on par with most Mexican restaurants in the Perth area. Is a place that I would visit again if able to get a seat as it it’s normally difficult if you’re going in groups on weekends.

While Mexican Kitchen is a bit of a Fremantle institution, I’m not entirely sold on it. The service is slow and occasionally a bit on the surly side and the food is consistently below average. I’m not sure about the explosions of flavour Camilla is talking about, as I have ordered most things on the menu here and found them consistently bland. The only reason my friends and I return here is their ludicrous cocktail menu that includes the biggest fishbowls in Fremantle. These are a hilarious way to start a messy night out and even if the food is a bit on the average side, it is full of rice and so at least useful as an insulator against the effects of a heavy night’s drinking.

This one star may seem to be in drastic contrast to the previous 2 reviews you have read. Bear in mind this one star does not reflect the quality of the food becuase I never got the chance to sit down and try the food. My reasons are as follows. I went to Mexican Kitchen on a Tuesday night with a group of friends(7 in total) for a casual birthday dinner. Not allowing reservations, we show up and are delighted by the sight of 5 or 6 empty tables upstairs. We ask the waitress about getting tables at which point she shook her head and muttered ‘probably not’ before she headed downstairs and had a quick look and came back up with a look of ‘not today folks’. When we commented on the 4 empty tables that were situated right beside where we were standing(each with 4 empty chairs) she commented that it is policy not to push tables together. ?? We had no interest in pushing tables together, they are already right on top of each other but no-one here was willing to serve a group of 7! So we headed across the road to Zapata’s where we were greeted with smiles and treated well all evening. So if the food here is great I will never know because I won’t be returning here.

My friends and I used to frequent this joint in our early uni days and I haven’t been back since, so you probably should be mindful of the five years that is exist between my experience and this review. The story goes a little like this: It’s Saturday night, I’m wearing my newly-purchased V-neck shirt and white shoes from Live, my friends and I order a Fishbowl between us(40 buck slushy-style cocktails in a big glass), we drink, we order some chicken Nachos, we drink some more, we eat, we drink again, more again, and then we head to Metros Freo jelly-legged and on top of the world. Rinse and repeat for a good two years I’d say, and you can understand why I’m hesitant about going back. They were good times, though. Those Fishbowls were a party in themselves.

There is a little joke that Americans have on us Australians. Far removed from Mexico and the secrets to their authentic cuisine and phenomenal flavours, we are deemed«muchos tonto». How quaint we are with our imitation nachos and lack of Mexican holidays! To such naysayers, I would like to recommend Mexican Kitchen. Back in the days when Perth was a holiday destination, I always had one request(and no, it wasn’t to take me back to the airport). If we were going to dine out in one of the world’s most expensive places to eat, we had to make it Mexican Kitchen. When I say this is the best Mexican I’ve ever had, I’m not exaggerating. Take me there for nachos and I’ll gladly explain why it sounds like I’m in the throes of erotic rapture between mouthfuls of tacos. It is THATGOOD. If you need something to wash down your GIGANTIC meal(their entrees are an effort to get through themselves!), get one of their cocktails. I don’t even like cocktails, but I really enjoyed my Mexican Pink Fling. Fruity, just strong enough and didn’t require any extra fillings afterwards. The place is quite simply amazing — it’s flamboyantly painted in fluro colours, the bar looks like HEAVEN with every liquor imaginable stocked, and you also get a choice of sitting upstairs or downstairs. Both are comfy, but downstairs is better for groups. Serious fun for non-serious folk.
