This café is a great all rounder with a menu to suit just about everyone(even your ‘greenie’ friends). They have a spacious tropical themed setting that is simple but does its job, leaving much more room for practical seating inside and out. It’s serve yourself water but who wouldn’t want to open an old school cherry red Coca Cola fridge?! They definitely make self serve more enticing. The food is great, not too extravagant but still interesting and very tasty at a fair price. Coffee is awesome too! And I love the fact that they do all day breakfast for us night owls! Bacon and eggs at 3pm? Yes please!

oooo I like this café — it is next to a bunch of hipster places, but surprisingly, isn’t full of hipsters. I love the food, coffee is nice too, and the people behind the counter are lovely. Inside and outside seating, and I leaned over a couple having breakfast, it looked nice(although they looked at me strangely). Prices aren’t too bad, typical café prices. I’m heading here next weekend to try the breakfast.

This is a great place to hide out from the chaos of South Terrace on a weekend. With its’ casual, relaxed ambiance in the middle of the op shop district, this is a great place to head out if you’re a local. I’m rarely a breakfast-hours kind of person, but when it comes to lunch, I can vouch for their range of panini, which are all delicious. On weekends, you can generally find local musicians plucking guitars or other acoustic instruments in the corner, and it’s nice to see a local café supporting that. It’s not somewhere I’d meet for a coffee, but as somewhere to treat as an extension of my lounge room, it works pretty well.

Another brunch spot in Freo. They are literally sprouting up all over the place. La Tropicana has the usual brekkie fare serving up eggs benedict and pancakes. Their prices are a little inconsistent requesting $ 19 for their house breakfast which doesn’t even have sausages or hash browns. On the other hand their choice of eggs on toast is only $ 10. In addition, their burgers on the lunch menu are only $ 14 and served with chips, very cheap if you consider what otehr places in Freo charge. The salad bar is great value too if you are not in the mood for a big feed. Its far from the Market Street and South Terrace atmosphere but it is still pretty good and has an outdoor area. Handy to avoid the crowds.

With a name that conjures up images of island-themed décor, fresh coconuts and an exotic menu full of international cuisine, La Tropicana doesn’t really deliver on the excitement. With Perth’s steep dining prices, I really like to experience the place I’m eating at. In a place like Fremantle one would expect a funky décor, but the café is fairly mediocre. The inside is quite spacious, which would be perfect if the place were packed out with big brekkie orders on a daily basis. However, the only reason I ever order my coffee from La Tropicana is because there’s never a line. The coffee is so-so, and the barista is usually prompt in making your order, so I can’t complain too much. I am a huge fan of their salads though! $ 12 for a large, and you get a number of choices, I thoroughly recommend Ben to serve you a generous helping of corn and chickpea, roast vegies and beetroot and corn(he always gives the biggest servings!). Definitely give the place a visit if you’re in a rush, but if you’re looking to impress company with the local surroundings, maybe head to South Terrace instead.
