This is definitely the smallest art gallery I’ve ever been in. But what little space Hole in the Wall do have, they put to good use. They showcase the work of local artists, and their exhibitions are always worth a browse. And by browse, what I mean is standing in the centre of the tiny space and rotating slowly. No walking is necessary — it really is that small. If you’ve got a spare five minutes, Hole in the Wall is well worth taking a peek at.

It makes me really angry when people bemoan Perth’s lack of attractions. There’s quite a few good treasures in this young sea-side city, and Hole in the Wall gallery is one of them. True to their name, they really almost are a hole in the wall, operating on teeny weeny premises and showcasing a few select art works that can be scanned in the space of 5 seconds. Sandwiched within Fremantle’s grungier part of town, amidst graffit-laden alley ways, tattoo parlours, rickety second-hand book shops and a design studio, there really is no better place for an urban-style art gallery to flourish. They specialise in supporting young, local, up and coming artists, with a focus on grungey, low-brow illustration, but have also featured some really good photographers too, like E. J Swinhoe and Joel Wynn Rees. Their launches are intimate soirees, and well worth checking out should you want to mingle with the creative talent of Perth. I also obsessively follow their Tumblr, where they keep an amazing visual diary and interview artists. Check it out here —
