I’ve walked past this restaurant numerous times over the years but I’ve never ventured in. I decided to eat here as this was the only restaurant that I could find that had meat ravioli and I was craving it. From the outside this restaurant(which has been in Freo for a long long time) looks old and it does on the inside too, it’s not necessarily a bad thing though as it feels quite homely. It was quite busy too for a Wednesday night. First off, the good — All tables get bread after sitting down If you order a main you get complimentary soup of the day The staff were friendly and service was good The average — I had the main sized ravioli but to be honest it was on the small side. Whilst the ravioli itself was yummy the sauce was a bit watery as I don’t think they drained the ravioli enough. I’ll likely go there again though to give it another try

Capri Restaurant is a family owned institution in Fremantle, and has been there for as long as I can remember. There is a distinct family/homely feel about the place. There are lace curtains hung on wooden rods in the windows that distinctly remind me of my Nonna’s house, there are pictures and paintings on the walls and an antique-looking dresser that holds crystal glasses and other trinkets — just like home! The staff there also give the impression that they are a family, which is really nice to see. The service across the night was great! We were seated immediately without a reservation, although there were several free tables and it did seem fairly quiet. We were seated in the back room, that you access through a low archway. It almost makes it seem like a family home divided up into sections. We were given menus and told the specials, shortly after water and complimentary bread and butter were delivered to the table. We ordered and the food came out quite quickly. We ordered the bruschetta, which was great! The bread was hot and crispy and the topping had the perfect amount of vinegar in it. Then the mains came out, which is where this place lost a few stars for me. The food is very minimalistic and again, exactly what Mama might serve up for dinner. Which can be good, but I think the servings were a little bland and distinctly lack-lustre. I ordered the veal which was nicely cooked but the sauce lacked flavour, and the vegetables on the side were steamed with no flavour to seasoning added. I also tried the pasta that a friend ordered which was definitely nothing like homemade! The pricing is quite reasonable but Capri seems a little unrefined and the menu and execution of the dishes could do with some improvement.

What a gem! We stayed in Fremantle unaware that Monday nights meade the city a ghost town. Everything except a few pubs seemed to be closed… but the we stumble across Capri. The place was PACKED. And although it looked a little worn, that many people couldn’t have it wrong. It turned out to be an authentic Italian place that seemed to be from another era. We were seated at the only free table in the place and quickly given menus and bread and butter to nibble on. We decided to go for pasta — spaghetti marinara and ravioli with bolognaise. After we ordered we were presented with complimentary minestrone soup. Wow. Best thing ever to take the chill out of out bones on a cold night. Then our mains arrived. The marinara is quite seriously the best I’ve ever eaten, oil and herb dressed, rather than tomato based, it had perfectly cooked seafood and pasta. The ravioli was also great. The restaurant is BYO with no corkage, so while we waited one of our party ran across the road to the pub bottle shop and grabbed a Margaret River Cab Sav(when in Rome… uh. WA). I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You’ll feel like Frank Sinatra or Don Corleone should stagger in…
