This is a great little place on johnston street. It has a real gastro pub feel. I went on a cool Melbourne Wednesday night and it had a lovely cosy feel. However it is rather loud in the restaurant bit with the floor boards so not a place for low talkers! Nice wine list and good service — we had a yarra valley Pinot Gris. I went with the special which was a Sardinian fish stew which was delicious and very full of seafood. Dinner companions had steak which got high marks as did the lamb rump. And definitely get the hand cut chips not the fries!

Love this latest reincarnation of the Town Hall Hotel. It doesn’t look that different from the previous version but seems more relaxed and the dining room m looks more inviting and casual. Good beer choice and the menu sound nice so will have to come back and try it one day.

Great comfortable place to enjoy a few front-bar beers and people watch along Johnston St. Classy without being snooty, laid-back without being grungy, Town Hall Hotel walks the line perfectly and proves itself a nice all-rounder pub, perhaps more for a chilled older crowd than big groups up for a big one.

I had NZ snapper here & that is deserving of a five-star rating in itself. But more than that, the staff here are fabulous — great to chat with & to have a laugh. Kate had a delicious beef pie. What was once an old-style pub has been transformed into a contemporary space exuding style combined with yesteryear charm. Very good menu and choice of wine & beer.

Nicely revamped gastro pub this end of Fitzroy. A far cry from its previous form, it’s decked out in shiny, dark floor boards with an extensive selection of cocktails(albeit a tad overpriced at $ 20 a pop) and wines. The front bar area is where it’s at with its high stools and sophisticated feel. Not too sure about the back dining area with its dull red walls and even duller chairs. We were there on a Tuesday night for drinks and it was really quiet. That aside, the satff appeared as too eager to peddle off food to us having come over repeatedly to ask if we wanted to order some. Perhaps they were just being helpful, or simply too free. Personally, I feel it would have been a much more pleasant experience if they could work on the chill factor — after all, we’re in Fitzroy weren’t we?

FACT; The worse phrase in the English language is «I don’t care, where do you want to go?». You know that group of friends you only catch up with a few times a year, leaving you wondering afterwards why you do it all? I recently had the great pleasure of meeting said group of friends. And to top it all up it was decided we would meet in fitzroy and«just decided where to go for lunch when we get there»(regeting this already). So yep, you guessed 15 minutes of standing in the street with no one willing to make the call,(«i don’t care, where do you want to go») decided the closes good Unilocal review was the place we would lunch. Thank the Unilocal gods than Minh had liked it(love her reviews). We opted to sit in the bar area, just preferred the atmosphere. Wooden floors, high tables with wooden bar stools. The dinning area looked a little dated to me. However we ordered from the restaurant menu. We shared a starter of deep fried oysters that were amazing. Lightly battered so you could taste the oyster. For main I had the veal that was served on a bed of rustic coleslaw. While the dish is a staple for many pubs these days, they were cooked perfectly and the thickness of the veal was enough to satisfy a man hunger. I will be back!

Food is good but overpriced. The fit out is attractive and modern, but with raised tables with stools as seating it leaves you looking over a busy road.

Located on Johnston Street, Town Hall Hotel is bringing a very effortless sophistication to Fitzroy. Inside, are various earth tone — dark brown tables and chairs against off-white paint. The bar is the first thing you see when you enter. I know there is a dining area somewhere behind the bar, but I like to sit in the bar area — it’s nice and bright. With an Italian inspired menu you can find dishes to share to larger plates for yourself. I wasn’t super hungry so I opted for one dish — a chicken dish that looks like it’s no longer on the menu, but that’s shame because it’s delicious! I remember the chicken being very tender and cooked perfectly. They have a great wine list that has a good balance of old and new world for $ 60. What I really liked about their wine list was that it had the Seresin sauvignon blanc by the glass — Seresin was my favourite wine from New Zealand when I lived in the States. The grapes are organically and biodynamically grown and are also handpicked — there’s much love put into this wine. And I loved that Town Hall Hotel had it by the glass($ 12). A very grown up place in a funky suburb.

So the space is killer! This is one of the greatest pub gardens in Fitzroy, ready for summer and winter(which is good on any day here, as we’ll get both seasons in a day). It’s a big pub also. With a dance floor. So this means that you can go for dinner and wind up staying late into the evening. Admit it, we’ve all done it once(or twice, or three times). I gotta admit, though, i’m not the hugest fan of the food. It’s not bad, but it’s just not the primary reason I’d ever go. It’s good and standard, and same as everything else in town. But for pub day that becomes stay all day party night, this is the spot.

I brought my dad here for Father’s Day lunch when the Town Hall Hotel was perhaps a week old. At such an early stage in the restaurant’s development, there were maybe a couple of issues that I’m sure will have been ironed out now. We sat in the bistro(no bar food for my dad, not on Father’s Day at least) and every table was full of happy, chatty people, clearly enjoying their food. There was a real family atmosphere about the place but that may have been because of the particular day of the year that we were there. The bistro menu is made up of small, medium and large sharing plates, plus meats from the grill, sides and desserts. I remember the spicy quail, and I’m sure my dad does too — it was delightfully crispy-skinned with a touch of spice and lovely moist meat on the bone. The other Italian inspired dishes we tried were all delicious, although my dad did ask the waiter for Tabasco sauce, to which I offered a ‘I’m sorry’ look at the waiter. This is not a slight on the food as much as an insight into my dad’s predilection for all things chilli. All in all, it was a a lovely lunch and I’m pretty sure that I’m now my dad’s favourite offspring.
