Less popular than the ‘King’ just two doors up, the Souvlaki Bar mostly caters to drunk Brunswick St revelers, and thus knows they don’t have to try too hard to impress. The Souvas are basic but certainly do the job late at night when you just need some food in your belly to even out the booze a little.

My sister loves Greek Food and I think in West End(Queensland) we are pretty spoilt for it there because you’d never get a bad souvla. Not only was it overpriced, there was a slight mix-up with the order. We ordered 3 souvlaki’s and the meat was just warm which always makes me worry with chicken I’m gonna get food poisoning… the sauce not enough and the bread was just blah. Definitely keen to try a different place on Brunswick St to see if it’s any better…

THISPLACEISDODGY. BEWARE! Many years ago this place ripped me and a friend off. We ordered and paid for our souvlakis. After waiting for them to be prepared, the person behind the counter again asked us to pay. We had had had quite a few drinks that evening and so doubted our recollection and paid again for our souvas. As we were eating them the same exact thing happened to another two girls, who were also asked to pay twice. We then realised that this shop targets late night hungry drunks to charge twice. Stay way from this place.

It was late at night, we had certainly had more beers than we should have, we stumbled into this place. My eyes went wide and I wanted to try *all the things*. Man, the food sure did look good. I ended up getting a souva with chilli flakes, very tasty. The little old greek man behind the counter was a hoot to order from too, he had us laughing while we were trying to order. I’ll absolutely be going back to Real Greek Souvlaki Bar the next time I’m down the Brunswick St strip.

Ohh who doesn’t enjoy a Souvlaki after too many drinks on a night out? Because i sure do. This venue is your traditional Greek souvlaki shop that not only does delicious souvlaki’s but also an abundance of Greek food like Feta filled olives, baklava and meat skewers. They are open all hours of the night and is the destination i give to my taxi driver(luckily i can walk home in a few minutes). They have a couple of vegetarian options for those of us who don’t consume meat as well. There’s always drunk people in here(well at night) so it’s good to get it take-away if you’re a local.

I used to really like this place. With its yummy roasted meat and fresh salads. And of course being situated in the heart of Fitzroy on Brunswick Street, it is ideally located for a late night soirée into drunken dining. But I got a little put off the last time I went there late one night. They got my order wrong. So when I went to return it, I was given another souvlaki from a missed order that they had been calling about since I had arrived 20 minutes earlier. Ok so the order was correct this time. But I didn’t really appreciate being given someone else’s kebab that had been sitting around for the last 20 minutes and was all cold. I know you are probably thinking that this isn’t so bad. Because I was probably drunk and obnoxious anyway. Well I beg to differ. I have seen the guys at the Real Greek Souvlaki Bar treat others like this too. In my view if you screw up an order you make amends for it in the usual manner. Anyway no big deal. Their souvlakis are as good as any, and you certainly don’t go to a place like this for tip top service.

As the name suggests, this is the place to come to get a real Greek souvlaki, great size and flavours and with the chips on the inside. There is a decent menu that obviously has the works when it comes to souvlaki. The display fridge offers all sorts of Mediterranean delicacies that all are home made. I tried the stuffed capsicum and the falafel with fluffy hummus, which was brilliant. The service here is a little abrupt but it feels authentic and honest. There is a sense of being in a family home, except for the constant buzz of the flouro lights and drinks fridge. Its open late night and gets the overflow of late night revelers who often mess the place up. You can purchase a drink in to the very early hours and they are more than generous with their pouring of wine.

This inconspicuous little diner is hardly different to most 24-hour Greek takeaways around here that get inundated with hungry drunks late at night, but it’s become a regular pit-stop for me when I need a light snack on the run during the day or on my way to work in the evening. And there are heaps of snacks to choose from: spanakopita, dips and pita, moussaka, all really cheap. I often grab a bag of four warm felafel balls for $ 3 or a tub of homemade dip for $ 4 to eat with a roll. There are basic tables and there’s an upstairs area I’ve never bother to check out — it always looks completely empty so I’m not even sure if it’s open to sit in, but perhaps it’s just never busy when I’m around(ie. not at peak time). The food can be hit and rather soggy miss. Sometimes what’s in the window tastes like it’s been sitting there for a while, and I often ask for the fresher felafel as I’ve had some dry ones in the past. But I guess you get what you pay for, and here you don’t pay much.
