Nostalgia and an appreciation for the things that make you think you’re in a different time frame from the one that we’re travelling through right now. Looking back to look forward? However you want to put it, Princess Highway is full of the retro clothes: the vintage look without actually being vintage. It’s all pretty standard in the price range if not leaning towards pricey but the clothes are pretty good quality so it’ll last. There’s lots to look at, plenty if you need a new skirt or top. Good basics and a few fun party dresses. It’s mostly daytime wear though. The staff are nice and know lots about their products so you know you can ask if need be.

Princess Highway is where Melbourne’s girls who think they’re Rockabillies but stop short of committing to the milieux with anything as permanent as a tattoo, a too-short fringe, or a piercing, shop for their garb. It’s not that there’s anything really WRONG with Princess Highway, it’s just not my style. Think polka dots — admittedly a personal print favourite — think rose motifs that upon closer inspection are actually comprised of SKULLS, think jaunty collars on fifties inspired dresses that have been cut so short they’re actually more sixties. It is a very particular aesthetic and I know many who swear devotion to the Princess Highway look. It’s just not for me. That said, this is a very well done boutique in a great location and with a good selection of the brand’s designs. Definitely worth a browse to see if Princess Highway is your style. Me, I’ll be at one of the clutch of genuinely retro shops down the road…

Princess Highway is an Australian designed clothing line. A relatively tiny company, their clothes are found within the majority of Dangerfield stores across Australia. However, they have also started to open up some boutique shops throughout Australia that focuses purely on Princess Highway. One of these shops is located on Brunswick Street in what used to be the Coo Ca Choo women’s clothing shop. What do I like about Princess Highway? So they’re not unique — I’m sure if I buy a garment, 10 other females will have it as well. But I love how they bring together feminine prints, particularly floral patterns, with edgier colours. I don’t like flowers, but I found a great black dress with bright red/pink floral prints. It had the right amount of femininity that I was comfortable with. Plus, it’s affordable. I’ve also bought several hats and beanies here. I love their hats from the floppy beach hats to berets to bucket hats in simple monochrome colours that go perfectly with whatever you decide to wear.
