Laid back, cute Brunswick st café for breakfast and lunch or brunch! Good prices, great coffee and a cosy atmosphere. The breakfast bowl is healthy eating at its finest. Although the menu is little, it looks delicious for not too much cost. Only one table for four people so not recommended for a big group but great for a catch up with a friend either to eat or just a coffee date. If you are after a hangover breakfast, this isn’t your place as the menu appears healthy.

Newtown is a newish little digs, right across the road from Smith and daughters. So far all the usual coffee suspects are on the list, albeit with excellent coffee and cold drips are around too. It’s a smallish place, that fills quickly. A great coffee destination for the fitzroy area.

I give this place 5 stars just for the coffee. Probably come past here 10 or so times on the way to tafe and am always served promptly and with a smile. The coffee is delish and always a perfect temperature. The food menu is always changing and looks delicious so definitely plan to come past for a meal one day. It’s a cute and intimate café but this review is only for the takeout coffee and cake which was primo. My fave coffee place in Fitzroy so far!!!

Maybe you think that cafes are not on Brunswick… I know I did. Well, you’re just wrong. For now, it’s quite nice that this is the general thought, because Newtown is so cute, tiny and undiscovered. Good coffees here, and they make them quite quickly if you need to head out with a takeaway. Also delicious are the light breakfasts. They serve the standard staples; muesli, avocado and feta on toast, eggs, but also do some great bagels topped with all kinds of goodies. Makes me miss the Jewish delicatessens in NYC, but this is about as close as it gets down here!

One of Brunswick Street’s longest standing cafes, Newtown SC was one of the pioneers of the cool cafes to emerge in the area. Their cute kitschy eclectic paved the way for the other successes you fin there today. They don’t just serve amazing cake and more amazing coffee — which are both amazing in their own ways. Many of the knick knacky bits around you are also for sale, as are a collection of plants found here and there and everywhere. The small succulent plants are served/sold in eggcups, matching the madness of the crockery that surrounds you. This eclectic mix makes me think of the first share houses you move into where everyone brings their own three plates and a teapot, so nothing matches. Nothing matches but it works so well.

In a world where the price of coffee is rising every day(I have decided that once it hits $ 4 a latte I’m switching to water) it’s great to find a gorgeous little coffee shop that sells them for only $ 3.20! But Newtown is not just about coffee, they have great food as well! The menu is all about the simple stuff where you will find muesli, baked eggs and even the classic avo and fetta on sourdough — but all of a fantastic quality and made with fresh, good quality produce. There is no ‘heavy’ food on the menu, so don’t come here if you are after a big, greasy hangover brekky. This morning I treated myself to the muesli which came with poached pear, sliced banana, cranberry and yoghourt to top it off. So. Very. Tasty. The interior is very kitschy, but Newtown pulls it off without being tacky — mismatched crockery, wooden tables and chairs and even a photo of Milo & Otis on the wall. This is a great place to kick-start your morning or weekend.

Newtown SC on a quiet stretch of Brunswick Street towards the city end is a cool little breakfast/brunch joint that has the feel of a very low key trendy English tea room. Their coffee is nice, strong and smooth and their menu is small and simple offering a mixture of croisants, bagels and pides. I went for a croissant with tomato, ham and cheese(a pretty boring choice I know), they had none left and instead made it in a bagel for me. The bagel was light and extremely moreish. I’d say it was that bit tastier than beans and bagels down the road. The staff were really friendly and the vibe the place gives off is really great. The décor is 60sesque and chairs are small and comfy(it’s possible). There is also a plaque which says«It’s not the end of the world» — a quote made famous by Shaun of the Dead amongst others. For good coffee, a relaxed vibe and a small bite to eat I’d recommend it. If really hungry, I’d probably choose somewhere else.

There seems to be a renaissance of sorts happening on what has typically been known as the sleepy end(the Southern end) of Brunswick Street. Opening just across the road from Umago Café and nearby the recently established(and permanently bustling Slowpoke Espresso is new arrival, Newtown Social Club. Decked out in suitably«Fitzroy» 60s décor and paintings of kittens, Newtown achieves a sense of offbeat, relaxed style, whilst managing to avoid being overly twee. The menu is fairly standard café fare: basic hot breakfasts, baguettes, pies and pasties, etc. There are, however, a couple of standouts on Newtown’s menu. The New York-style pastrami bagel, for example, with sauerkraut, dill pickles, cheese and mustard, is mind-blowingly awesome(particularly on a hangover)! Alternatively, be sure to try the spiced baked beans with feta, which is also delicious. Newtown’s coffee is high quality and a worthy competitor with the various boutique coffee houses in the Fitzroy area. One frustrating aspect of Newtown, however, is its compact size and inevitably increasing popularity. Already it can be difficult to get a seat and is a somewhat awkward space to negotiate if you’re just looking to pick up a coffee(or second takeaway bagel for the day). Its bustling patronage means that the service(which is friendly and attentive) can be a bit on the slow side, so it’s not the ideal place to stop by for a quick feed on the rush to work. But if you manage to score a seat and are happy to settle in and relax, Newtown won’t disappoint.

I’ve tried to go to Newtown S.C.(I found out later that S.C. stood for Social Club) many times, but for some reason I always forget they’re closed on Sundays. I finally made it there on a Tuesday morning before work to grab a coffee and quick bite to eat. Newtown S.C. is a quaint and tiny café where you’d meet up with a friend for a quick cup of coffee and a catch up. Located at the quiet end of Brunswick Street in a tiny space that fits only 10 people, this new café has already attracted many regulars. Although the menu is limited, the breakfast menu is served all day. You can choose from a variety of bagels, croissants, pides, and toasties with ingredients such as artichokes, prosciutto, pesto, etc. Want something a bit more interesting? Try their sauerkraut, cheese, dill, cucumber, and mustard bagel. If you were looking for a big meal I would opt out of Newtown S. C. They are going for small and simple, but good dishes. With a cosy atmosphere, small menu(average $ 8), good coffee($ 3.20), and great service, Newtown S.C. is a great addition to Fitzroy.
