I like Brunswick Street Bookstore. It is a small shop with an interesting range of books that other larger bookshops dont have — particularly the chain bookshops. It focuses on arty type books such as photography and stuff like that. For the genres Im into, it has a large range of Lonely Planet titles and quite a few travelogues. I also got a really good tattoo book there once — but that was a long time ago. The staff are friendly but they also leave you alone to browse and dont bother you. It also has some very comfortable chairs at the back to sit in and read — which is also a nice touch. I also like the fact that it is open late. If you are meeting someone at a restaurant or café or pub and you arrive early, where better to kill some time than having a look at the books! A shop with a very very nice energy!!!

Part of a dying breed of independent bookstores. The interesting thing about Brunswick Street Bookstore is that whilst it doesn’t exclusively stock a particular genre, it DOES seem to stock the sort of publications you wouldn’t find at a chain bookstore. More offbeat /leftwing /whatever type books, somewhat underground magazines and the like. Definitely worth a look if you’re in the area or a call if you’re after a particular printed prize.(I like alliteration, ok?)

A clean, well-run and on-top-of-it independent bookstore in the middle of Brunswick St, here’s where you’ll find the latest local and international releases as well as a good selection of pop-culture, travel and gift books. It’s also where all the latest Australian literary journals can be found, making it an important destination for anyone interesting in new Australian writing or any short-story lover. The Lifted Brow, Meanjin, Going Down Swinging, Wet Ink, Overland… they’re all here. In my experience, the staff are basically there to make the sale and that’s about it. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want — to be left alone to wander around(especially if you’re just killing time waiting to meet up with a friend, which is also what I use BSB for as it’s open late into the night) — but sometimes you wish they’d smile at you as they did it, or perhaps just stop talking to the other staff members. No, they won’t alter your view of the bookshop snob, but their range of books will make you happy regardless.
