This is now my favorite café in Erskineville. The potato rosti is amazing… coffee is lovely, atmosphere is great, and they also have wine and good beer. The staff are so helpful and friendly. Love it.

One of my favourite spots in the Erko village. A great place to meet for brunch on a sunny day. Super dog-friendly. The menu’s not huge but everything’s really tasty. Great coffee too and don’t miss the wide selection of pastries inside. Friendly service and the owner makes everyone feel like a local! Oh and they have jazz trios play during the summer weekends.

The Bakerman is full of personality and oozes local charm. When waiting for a coffee early one morning, a lady was standing waiting to buy a loaf of bread, she had been standing there a while listening to the barista chat to a couple of regulars, when the barista does finally serve the lady he is very apologetic about making her wait, and she replies ’ That’s ok! I come here for the atmosphere anyway!’ Early mornings are the best for the Bakerman popping in for a coffee, a very friendly chat from the owner, maybe a fresh takeaway quiche for lunch, and you walk away feeling like a true local. On a more lazy weekend, their poached eggs on toast have always been perfect, the little tables splayed out onto a spacious, shaded courtyard in a very European fashion, it’s a great place for a long brunch, a hangover breakfast, or just a lovely long catch-up with friends. I have even heard that during summer, this little patisserie will turn into a wine bar in the evening! I’m keen to see what that’s like!

We only stopped here for a flatty and a mocha. The latter was a bit too sweet for my taste. Prices are ok: $ 3 each.

Don’t get me wrong-this is good, standard café food, but a little pricey. This French/Lebanese bakery and café is famous among locals for its breads, cakes, Aussie pies, quiches, sausage rolls and other pastries. I tried their famous Bakerman Bacon and Egg Roll and sure enough, it lived up to the hype-a gorgeous dollop of mayo and crunchy bacon snuggled in a crusty bun. But. What’s up with the $ 8.50 price tag? At the end of the day it’s just bread, bacon and eggs. I washed this down with a coffee(the Molinari brand) and it was ok if a little bland. One time I stopped for lunch and chose the spinach and ricotta quiche with a side salad($ 9.50). It was exactly what I was after(I love cheese!) but it was on the small side-the salad almost took over the plate but it certainly wasn’t the star. There was not enough dressing; the leaves were a little dry. There IS something about this place that keeps me coming back though. It has a really tranquil atmosphere and is a great alternative for breakfast or lunch if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of nearby King St in Newtown. There are also gluten-free menu options and free Wi-Fi. The cosy village square is great for kids to run around after school while you sip your latte and people watch. Just don’t let the kids see the $ 6.50 fruit smoothies. Great ambience and service but costly food you could get pretty much anywhere.

Ok who buys an Italian desert in a French Pattiserie. Only me! That had to be the stupidest thing to do. So there were extravagent tarts to tickle everyones fancy, pastry galore and cakes. But I chose to go the tir a masu. Which was missing a huge component of Almond essence. But anyhow, I know I will be back to try something French because the sugar in the air smelt right, you know what i mean? The glaze over the muffins sat with dignity and greed was nowhere to be seen. What I’m trying to say is, they are very conscious of the sugar factor, and avoid the overkill in their bake out. the service was remarkable and the ambience very cute with traditional french dining setting, tables dressed with white table cloths out the front of a cottage style building. Quaint.
