I came for the juice but I stayed for the rest. Since moving to Oz I haven’t bought a new juicer so this place has replaced me juicing for the moment. This is one of the only things I have found in Oz that is cheaper than the states. Fresh cheap juice! Tara who usually juices on the weekends when I come in is always smiling and is friendly. Come in to get good hummus for cheap and a large selection of nuts. Also when Woolys across the street is selling $ 4 avocados come here for $ 1 avocados.

Sonsa Foods is your typical cheap, can’t get most of the stock anywhere else and never been swept let alone mopped kind of store. They stock a fantastic range of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern products. With breads, condiments, sauces, fresh produce, nuts, grains and deli products amongst other things. It is all very reasonably priced, although they do seem to kind of make up prices when you go to pay at the till. But that is all part of the experience as far as I am concerned. If you pop in, I guarantee that you will leave with a good number of exciting products that you just can’t wait to eat. Also you absolutely cannot miss the opportunity to get a massive $ 4 fresh juice made at their juice bar outside. It may not look flash, but the juice they make is perfectly fine and about half the price of rip off merrchants such as Boost.

I have to be honest with you fellow Unilocalers, I have never been inside Sonsa Foods. By the sounds of it I really should as it seems like another grocery store that just offers stuff you can’t anywhere else. What I have sampled here and do on a fairly regular basis are their freshly made juices in a hole in the wall right in front of the store. You can pretty much take your pick from all the veggies and fruits they have on offer. They are made right in front of you and are really tasty too. They are that bit cheaper than the chains such as Boost etc. If passing, it’s hard to miss and hard not to be tempted!

Injera breads for dirt cheap! YES Canned black beans! One of the only places I can find them! Don’t even get me started on their hummus and fetas! They might not be the end-all, be-all of grocers, but they’ve got real, local made products that are tastier than the chain brands’ options, and are cheaper on lots of things. If you want to get in trouble, just go in hungry and work your way down the cold case on the right of the store. You’ll have more than you can carry for the change in your pocket!

Haha… I’m working my way through that jar of pickles too! Yes, definitely agreed. This Turkish grocer is awesome. They have a really interesting selection of foods available, such as a type of Mediterranean candy called«Horse Pills»(no joke) that I think is made from horseradish? AND, they sell the Injera bread used in Ethiopian cooking, which is insanely good! Their selection of fruit and vegetables are well priced and so much fresher than the Woolworths down the road. The staff are really helpful and the other day they gave me a free piece of Turkish Delight with my groceries! I don’t even like Turkish delight, but I left the store with a cosy feeling, like a warm hug from Nanna in exchange for a piece of bottom-of-the-handbag diabetic candy.

This Turkish grocer is a Smith St stalwart and a local treasure. A place to get some super cheap fresh fruit and vegies from the stand out the front(and there are more vegies inside) as well as breads, dips, olives and cheeses and imported and bulk items like tinned beans and sauces. The other day I bought a two-and-a-half kilo jar of pickles for $ 4. That is ridiculous. The old guy who runs the store will always help you find things if you’re lost amongst the giant tins and also often rounds down on the already low prices, which shouldn’t be such a shock but it certainly doesn’t happen at the Woolies down the road. There’s also a super cheap juice bar attached to the side where you get to pick your fruits and they’re blended up right in front of you.
