Things have changed. There used to be great specials — sometimes there are, often no specials are displayed. The Reuben used to be served with a great potato salad — then it changed to an average potato salad, then a coleslaw and now some pickled veg. No where near as good. They used to do bacon and egg sliders which the kids loved! — then they regularly ran out of the brioche buns now it’s not on the menu at all. Fail.(Although they did go to the effort of making impromptu open sandwich cheese and ham toasties which the kids loved. Coffee — this is still great. Consistently good. Price — still really affordable. And the Reuben sandwich itself is still one of the best I have had. So yeah, things have gone downhill a bit, but it’s still a good place to go for a coffee and a snack.

Was coming here with high expectations and overall didn’t quite get there. We had the KGB breakfast(scrambled eggs, bacon, beans, mushroom and wurst with toast) & the BLAT. The KGB was ok and the best part was definitely the bacon and wurst, but with tasteless eggs and average beans it really wasn’t much to be excited about. The BLAT was nice and the Brioche bun very good but again nothing great. Also got Long Blacks and they were very nice indeed. This helped overall but I won’t eat breakfast here again, I will return and try lunch because of the coffee and quality of the meats.

Very different scene from your typical café in Coburg; post-modern décor, typical Melbourne specialty café set up. Communal table, leather lounge chaise inside, quirky fitted, great ambiance indoor & outdoor. Missing that thick crema with the Short Black and dry. Can do better with the beans. Parking can be tricky, easily one of the best place to hangout in Coburg

So this little Jean is moving into the Eastern Bloc. With such laid back staff churning out amazing All Press coffee on one sexy LaMarocco machine who wouldn’t want to slid under the iron curtain? We stopped by here on a Sunday morning bike ride. Lattes turned up at the right moment accompanied by a stunning orange and almond friand. The space is open, welcoming and warm. Large terrariums and green moss bunnies adorn the tables. The music makes me think of the mother country and wanting to go back and work in the fields. This has just become my new must go to place!

When I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to have a friend’s mum regularly load me up with home-made perogies, the likes of which I hadn’t seen for years, until recently when I ventured over to the Eastern Bloc, which serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner with homemade fares such as said perogies, sauerkraut and borscht. The Eastern Bloc makes up for its unfortunately un-scenic location adjacent to Coburg Station by decorating with large comfy leather couches and an endless array of kitschy knick-knacks. The staff are lovely, and the coffee is very good. What with said couches, large homey communal tables and a strew of newspapers, you can easily pass a morning indulging.
