A gourmet lovers paradise, try & find something you want that they don’t stock! Every neighbourhood needs a McCoppins, they might not realise it yet is all. There’s dry goods, a meat & cheese section, coffee beans, wine… It’s your little local gourmet shop that stocks produce from near & wide. And if they don’t have it(whatever ‘it’ might be) they’ll have an alternative. Now if only they offered a Unilocalers discount…

Good quality deli products, wine and bread. But the service is so unfriendly and unfamiliar. For a high end, local deli I expect better. I go here at least a couple of times a week, and never get a smile or a hello, even when I’m being served. It’s a bit of a shame as there is generally a really nice sense of community in this area.

If your planning a picnic, morning tea, wine and cheese night or if you just want something nicer then usual then McCoppins can sort you out. Within the doors of McCoppins you will find cheese, wine, bread and meat from around the world. It isn’t exactly cheap but it is good value, so if your after something a little bit special then this place is for you. The staff know their product and can help you out too. The supermarket out the back is handy for groceries or random essentials. For your regular grocery shopping needs your better off heading to a chain though as the stock is priced for convenience rather then budget. For fresh delicatessen essentials, wine and fresh bread then McCoppins in Clifton Hill is a great one stop shop.

McCoppins kind of accentuates the bourgeois middle-class elite-isms that have crept in to the once working class Clifton Hill. They do kind of higher end produce and deli goods with boutique breads and cheeses and the likes. Obviously, their prices match the merchandise and, though it can be a great place to pick up picnic supplies in a hurry, this ain’t no place for struggling artists to get their weekly groceries. That said, they’re obviously catering to a specific demographic, so it’s hard to begrudge them what they do. They do stock some good sourdoughs and ciabattas, so if bread’s your thing and you can’t be arsed walking to the North Fitzroy bread emporiums, McCoppins probably have the best Cliffy Hill has to offer. I hate that they don’t use the possessive apostrophe in their signage as well. Maybe they speak of many McCoppins.

If you like cheese, like I like cheese, then you’ll like McCoppins. They have a rather large cheese selection as well as other deli delights like meats and marinated vegies. They also have a nice selection of wines and beers, perfect if you need to take something to a party or just want to treat yourself. They have a supermarket part of the store but if you’re looking for a huge amount of variety for fresh produce it’s best to go to a grocer or supermarket chain. It doesn’t seem like this is what McCoppins is aiming for anyway, so it’s just a little bonus, really. If you want cheese, alcohol and loo paper, McCoppins is the place. The staff are friendly and helpful. I love a place where the staff have actually tried what they’re selling, it makes the shopping experience so much easier and way more personal.
