I’ve heard the argument before that because Sydney has the harbour, it hasn’t needed to work as hard as Melbourne to become a great city. If you’ve been to both cities you’ll know this has some truth — every thing except Melbourne’s natural landscape makes it the more appealing city. Its cultural life for instance is far richer. This, I think, applies with venues too — if a café is situated in a great location, it doesn’t have to work as hard as one that isn’t to create a great experience because nature does much of the work for it. Rarely will you find a café situated in a great location which provides excellent food and service, although today I think I may have found one — Castle Cove Café. Castle Cove, in Sydney’s lower North Shore, is a secluded suburb that runs along Middle Harbour, an inlet of the Tasman Sea. That it’s so serene and beautiful means that any café that opens within it has an inherent advantage. Castle Cove Café, however, doesn’t rest on these laurels. The service is fantastic and the food is reasonably priced(my schnitzel burger was $ 9, and my friend’s hotcakes were $ 11), and tastes brilliant. I don’t live in the area but I may have to make it a weekly tradition to come here.
