It’s all in the broth. Someone said that once. Well, Saigon Phó is good value but won’t offer you flavourful broth. If you are a Phở lover, Saigon Phở would fill your craving but don’t bank on being impressed or overly satisfied. What I do like, is that Saigon Phở is fast, friendly, and straightforward, and yes it breaks the usual food scene of Lygon st. If you are out on a phở mission though, you might want to venture further and go south.

We decided to try this place and I was disappointed! I LOVE phở and have had a lot of great phở in Melbourne. Firstly, I expected a larger serving size for their largest size(regular for $ 10). I wish I had taken a photo to show you how my small noodle portion was drowning in a large bowl of soup. The beef was minimal and all in small pieces, not large thin slices like other phở places. Also, no offer of hot tea(usually free) which ALL of the other phở places offer! Extremely disappointed and we will not be coming here again! I was tempted to head to another phở place to get a good fix!

Come here for a fragrant phở with a burst of refreshing mint. A nice change from pizza and pasta!

While Lygon Street is best known for its Italian cafes and restaurants, up the Queensberry Street end there’s a number of good, cheap Asian and Middle Eastern eateries. The only Vietnamese of the bunch is Saigon Phở, and fortunately it’s good. Run by two young women, Saigon Phở is bright and cheerful. The shop front retains the beautiful original features, but inside the restaurant is modern and clean. Most importantly, the phở is awesome! It’s related to the Footscray eatery of the same name, and features the same super fresh ingredients, including a decent cut of meat — not too chewy. The menu also has other standard Vietnamese fare, too. The prices are virtually the same as you’d pay on Victoria Street, so it’s a good alternative if you can’t be bothered trekking to Richmond for a cheap night out. At my last visit they were still waiting for the liquor license to be approved, but soon you should be able to BYO or buy beer and wine. And they also offer a very quick take-away service, which is great for us Carlton natives who are sick to death of pizza.
