This a great little french bakery in the inner northside of Melbourne. Great coffee, tempting cakes and breads. Croissants are amazing! Its never too busy, perfect for a Sunday; but anytime, the food is so good, you can close your eyes as the sugarly delight hits your lips and you will be hit with the nostalgia of that little Parisan patisserie, just around the corner from your hotel the last time you visited Paris.

Sitting opposite a cemetary is possibly not the most appropriate place to nosh down on a decadent pastry but this has not seemed to stop Filou’s from being consistently popular for a number of years. While most other cafes nearby specialise in your Sunday morning hangover breakfast, Filou’s has gone in the other direction taking care of your Sunday afternoons with Mum — danish and a cuppa anyone? This isn’t my favourite destination but sometimes all a girl needs is a whole bunch of carbs and Filou’s is full of them.

Filou’s is a tiny little French Patisserie which makes everything on the premises. The pastries and sweets in here look amazing. They also have pies, quiches and croissants. Not a lot for the vegetarian. I have sampled the chicken pie which was delicious, although I nearly choked on the price. Since when did pies cost $ 6? Maybe I have been out of the pie game too long.

Filou’s chocolate meringues might look a little like dog poo, but I assure you they taste much, much better. This French Patisserie opposite the cemetery on Lygon Street is run by actual French people, which means the service isn’t the friendliest. Not that I mind — their sweets make me smile no matter how surly the staff are. Filou’s bread is also pretty good, but I don’t rate the coffee. It’s drinkable, but it’s not as good as it could be. On weekends the few tables always seem to be taken by people other than me, so I generally opt for take away. If you can score a seat outside, it’s a good spot to sun yourself — there’s no foot traffic passing by in this residential strip, which gives you a nice sense of space.

Across from Melbourne cemetery, complete with gaudy orange signage to attract a passerby, stands the French Patisserie many Melbournians salivate at the thought of. I’d been sold on the idea of this place for a while, but sadly on many occasions my expectations have not been met. They do amazing French pastries as the name suggests, and they do lots of them, but straying from the path of sweets — into something like a quiche perhaps — left a bland taste in my mouth. The set up is great, the people are lovely and quite possibly French, so please enjoy your sweets in the sunshine of the corner establishment.
