Gangemis fruit and vegetables

We used to frequent this place because of the convenient hours and wide selection of fruits and vege until a worker in the store stocking potatoes on the shelf told us «Do not touch everything» when I picked up a bunch of asparagus. WTF?! how do you expect me to buy something without touching it. It wasn’t like I was squeezing or pinching the fruits or vege like it was going to bruise them.

Gangemi is my local green grocer and I buy fruit and veggies(and eggs) here at least once a week. The produce is extremely well priced — about the same prices and quality as at Vic Market, much better quality than the supermarkets next door and cheaper too — and they often have ridiculous fruit and veggie specials. They’re also open convenient hours which is definitely a plus!

When I shop here, I really get the feeling that I’m supporting local business, which makes me feel good. Turns out I’m not the only one who feels good doing this, seeing that Gangemi first opened its doors in 1983 and is still going strong in 2011. And it’s no wonder. There is always a huge variety of fresh fruit and vegetables on offer, with the cheapest deals laid out on the stands just outside the shop front. Inside the shop, the variety just continues and the deals keep on coming. Plus they also stock bread, eggs, spices and certain dried goods. There are weekly specials that you can find out about online to help you plan your meals. This week it’s mangoes, avocadoes, oranges and tomatoes — all cheap, all ripe as can be, and all making me very hungry. If you like things seasonal, the website also has a helpful page about what’s in season. The staff aren’t too friendly or smiley, but they know what they’re doing, and what they’re doing is making sure that you get the five-a-day that you need, and still have some change in your pocket. That’s a pretty sweet deal.
