Well, this is problematic. I discovered Balha’s on Saturday and now I am not quite sure how I’ll be able to stop myself from going in every single day. Lebanese eats, sweets and treats — I was like a kid in a candy store(or in this case, an adult in a pastry store.) I popped in hoping to find some baklava to take to my baklava-loving family for the long weekend and winner, winner, chicken dinner — I found some! And, OHMY it was good. A thick, crunchy pastry, not too sweet but very, very sticky. Absolute baklava perfection. If knafeh is more your jam they’ve got that too, as well as tamarah and namoura. Don’t know what any of that is? No worries! I don’t either, but I plan to spend a decent hour or so with a coffee sampling the goods in the coming weeks.

I love this place! Not the physical store so much, as there’s nothing special about it. But the pastries are delicious and I am yet to eat a better Arabic baklava elsewhere! I’ve been through a fair few too!

Just slow down on Sydney Rd, park your car and take a walk — explore the area! That’s what I did and came across this place. Beautiful coffee and pastries galore. I will be back for supper one day as the close at 10pm!

Bahla’s is full of sweet delights. They make some of the best baclava in Melbourne, loaded with butter, layers of crispy filo, delectable syrups and more nuts than you can poke a stick at. I dare you to stop at just 12.

By george do the Lebanese know how to bake a sweet treat! From filo pastry filled with clotted cream and syrup, sweet semolina cakes dotted with nuts, puff pastry rammed with crushed walnuts and orange blossom water, to my favourite, diamond baklawa, this bakery-café has got it all. If it’s sweet and syrupy, you’ll probably find it here. And there’s pleasure in just being in the café itself. Walk in and behold! A semi-circular smörgåsbord of all the pastries on offer, lined up in perfect rows on massive trays. Behind this 180 degrees of wonder, is the bakery where the magic happens. You see trays of freshly baked pastry babies being carried out and it feels like Sydney Road’s version of Willy Wonka’s factory. There are tables and chairs outside and upstairs if you want to stay and enjoy a great coffee with your baklawa, and in Summer, they make their own 100% fruit ice-cream too.
