Aways good. Same sushi chef since I can remember, going back 10 years or so. Menu has not changed a bit & neither has the furniture. Haha.

The food here is always delicious, and very affordable. Seafood bento box is my favourite for takeaway.

Lovely little authentic Japanese restaurant. Food is fresh and delicious, staff are usually lovely, and they have a selection of imported Japanese alcohols and Japanese non-alcoholic drinks. Only downside of this place is that it can get rather busy and noisy, and a lot of the tables are really close to each other. They also cater for large groups. There was a group of 25+ the last time I was here.

Matsumoto is a great little(or actually not so little) Japanese restaurant on Lygon Street and is probably my pick of the eateries on this strip. I’ve eaten here on a number of occasions with my partner and have never had a dud experience. The best thing to eat here is the sashimi. They take the stuff very seriously and appreciate fellow lovers of raw fish. They do a platter which comprises a selection of salmon, tuna, swordfish, scallops(!) and oysters. I’d never had a sashimi scallop before here and I must say the concept kind of freaked me out. I can gladly report that not only was it delicious, but the texture eclipses any other variety of raw fish. Their tempura is good here and the sushi is OK if not great. They serve the extra large Sapporo beer cans here for about $ 10, so BYO is not really important. Their prices are pretty reasonable, though not overly cheap, but the staff are always nice(even when extremely busy) and they will go out of their way to ensure you have an enjoyable dining experience.

If you want decent Japanese food, then Matsumoto will oblige. However, if you want really excellent Japanese, then it’s best to look elsewhere. The prices are higher than you’d expect as the serving sizes are a little bit small, even for Japanese, so it can add up to a more expensive meal out than you first anticipated. However, the sashimi is fresh and there’s a wider variety of fish than in some places. The Una Don(grilled eel covered in a sticky, sweet sauce) is particularly tasty, but is a little dry to be a full meal. There’re a couple of interesting drinks to choose from, and the beers aren’t too dear. The restaurant itself is a little plain and unfriendly, but not alienating, and it’s easy to get a table for two. It’s a little like the way classrooms used to be set up in schools way back in the day, but with tables for two to four rather than solitary desks. The service is efficient but slightly cold, and can sometimes drag a bit when you ask for the bill. All in all, a good option if it’s local but nothing you’d go out of your way for.

Having lived around the corner from Matsumoto for a good year, you’d think that it would be a popular spot to have some more upmarket Japanese food as a nice change from those large sushi hand rolls and the like you get everywhere on the go. But having tried it out once, I was satisfied but far from blown away. The sushi and sashimi was good, but nothing to really write home about. As the other reviewer pointed out, it is run by Chinese as opposed to Japanese. The service was pretty good. It was efficient without being exactly warm. Despite my little grievances, it seems that Matsumoto is very popular and is often busy whenever I walk past. It’s probably because there is hardly any other Japanese restaurant in the area. It’s good, but far from great.

After living in Japan for a couple of years I consider myself a bit of a(Japanese food) connoisseur. First thing I always do when I walk in to a Japanese restaurant, is listen to the staff. Not that I’m biased, but there is a big difference when you hear Japanese being spoken, as you can bet the food is going to be a lot more authentic. So I walked in to Matsumoto and heard Chinese being spoken, now this is also a bit of a bummer, because I can’t show off and order in Japanese. The place was jumping with people — it was Friday at about 7:30 — and we were squeezed into a window seat for two. The interior is quite simple and lacks the style of a true Japanese restaurant. The huge number of staff were efficient but faceless. The seaweed salad was one of the better ones I’ve had, much better than their attempt at salmon sashimi. Hacked off tiny bits of fish that didn’t exactly melt in the mouth.

I don’t understand why seafood is so expensive in Melbourne. It is right next to the sea! Perhaps it’s because there aren’t many edible creatures in the sea and Melbourne restaurants have to source their seafood from a non-local source? Who knows. This becomes a problem when you’re craving Japanese food(and I don’t mean the takeaway sushi rolls so prevalent in Melbourne), which does focus on seafood. This can make eating at Japanese restaurants quite expensive. Luckily, Matsumoto is reasonably priced and located in area that doesn’t have many Japanese options. For about $ 30 a person, you can have a great meal. Choose from their sushi bar(sashimi for $ 12.80/entrée or $ 21.80/main), sushi a la carte(tuna, salmon, octopus for $ 4-$ 9), or rolls(California roll for $ 7). For those who aren’t a fan of seafood(weird), try their delicious gyoza($ 7) or don or udon dish with beef($ 11.5). Good service, reasonably priced, and decent portion, you can’t go wrong here. Particularly for those in Brunswick East, it’s probably the best and only Japanese restaurant around.
