Someone at my work recently had the genius idea of lunch at The Barracks for a team reward. Just a short walk from our office, I have always liked the laid-back atmosphere there. As it was a weekday lunch, the foot-traffic was slow but steady. We lunched at a long table in front of the pizzeria in the mall walkway. I arrived late so can’t comment on the service except for our second round of drinks and food, which came promptly. The pizzas themselves were amazing. I do love a well-made dough and toppings that aren’t the cheapest ham and cheese. I loved the margherita but the others inhaled the marinara. Recommended for a quick dinner before a movie at the Palace or a long lunch anyway you can get away with it!

The first time I came here, the pizza was amazing!!! However, when I went back for round two I was a bit disappointed(thus the 3 stars). The first time, the crust was nice and crispy(but not too crispy…) and they had just the right amount of toppings. There must have been another chef/pizzatier the second time around, since they were a bit heavy handed with the toppings which made the crust a bit soggy :/. I had the Cappricciosa with prosciutto and white anchovies. Normally, I steer away from anchovies because they can be quite overpowering but I found there was a good balance and not too salty! I’d still go back… round 3 anyone?

Hi, so this is my first review, so I am giving you just little background on me. I’m an American(a southerner to be more precise) who has lived in Italy for more than 10 yrs and I travel the world for work. I have the opportunity to eat in all types of restaurants from fast food to 5 star. I have become a foodie since I have been living in Italy thanks to being married to my wife and eating all of my mother in law’s home cooked meals. I have also acquired the taste for wine. Of course my experience will be as a Southerner from the USA with many years of practice and experience in Italy. Over all the pizza was very good. I had the margherita pizza and I finished it completely. It was very similar to pizza in in Italy. The crust was nice and crunchy and it was topped with fresh basil. Although I love the smell and taste of basil, it makes me nauseous. I am glad they did not chop it up fine, so it was easily removed. The pizza was covered in pepper which was different. I have to say that it was good with a little cracked pepper The only defects were the tomato sauce and the cheese. It is really hard to reproduce the tomato sauce available in Italy. The tomato sauce in Italy is not as sweet. The sauce was definitely much better than Pizza Hut or Dominos, but it had just a hint of Campbell’s tomato soup taste. The mozzarella would be better if it were only the fresh type or buffalo mozzarella. I suggest you try this place especially if you are an Italian abroad with the craving for a pizza from home. It’s pretty close!

Eating pizza before seeing a movie is the start to a great evening. Since Pizzeria 1889 is right there, it is perfect for that. The only unfortunate thing is the pizzas at Pizzeria are not that filling(not for a huge glutton like me) but regardless of that, they are pretty tasty. First time I came here was with one other person, we ordered one pizza to share as that is usually enough to fill me up. Because the bases are as thin as paper, we ate the whole thing within 5 minutes– one pizza is not enough for 2 people. At around $ 20 each, the pizzas are not cheap considering you will have to order 1 per person. Costs aside, the pizzas here are good so if money is not an issue, by all means go here for pizza– their Margarita was delicious, I love it when Margaritas include basil(as they should) and are not just tomato sauce and cheese. If you are planning a date at the Barracks cinema, going to Pizzera 1889 is not a bad choice. Just make sure you order a pizza each.

The pizza at 1889 is okay. It’s a bit greasy and not really up to the standard I was expecting based on its Barracks location and Barracks prices, but it’s definitely edible. The pasta was more promising than the pizza, but it came out with the salad I’d ordered which was doused in way too much dressing. Honestly, the food at 1889 is fine, it hits the spot pre or post movie at the Barracks cinema. The problem is that the prices don’t match the quality and just because 1889 is in Barracks and has nice ambience and décor doesn’t make me too thrilled about paying Barracks prices for what is essentially local Italian take-away standard food. If you’re after a meal at Barracks there are better options(Peasant, Libertine, and FaB), but if you’re determined to have pizza by all means go to 1889, just don’t expect to get quite what you pay for.

With the Barracks mostly populated by fancy dining experiences, Pizzeria 1889 offers something a little different. Simple, yummy pizza delivered to your table without even a ramekin of snobbery. What a delicious thought! This casual pizzeria serves up some tasty bites, my particular favourites being the polenta chips(always a weakness), the mixed leaf and parmesan salad and the Zucca pizza topped with roasted pumpkin, garlic, pine nuts, fresh herbs and big, gooey globs of gorgonzola. I am literally salivating just thinking about it! The Patata pizza is also a winner(after all, who doesn’t love combining potato with dough?). The service was quick and friendly making for a super relaxed meal. Pizzeria 1889 is a great place to eat out if you don’t particularly feel like getting dressed to the nines or making a big deal of going out for dinner. Take a fussy friend there, because this little joint is a crowd pleaser.

These guys pride themselves on upholding the traditions of the inventor of pizza, Raffael Esposito, who made the first Margherita for the Italian Queen(of the same name) in, you guessed it, 1889. They stay pretty true to tradition, although the ‘Carnivoro’(a self-styled upmarket ‘meat lovers’) os probably pushing the envelope a little. Apart from boutique pizza from around $ 20 they do a range of other pasta, meat and fish dishes. My favourite is seared calamari, rocket and cherry tomato salad with red onion. They also have tasty polenta chips. The service is very quick and friendly. I really love dining al fresco here, especially when a football game at the nearby stadium provides plenty of passersby to people watch as I hoe into a delicious wood fired, thin based slice of heaven.

Potato pizza is my pizza weakness. If a bum on the street asked me to come down an alley for potato pizza, I’d probably go, sorry. I think with my stomach 99% of the time. Most of the excellent restaurants I go to are referrals from friends, and this place is no exception. She was like, feel like some potato-topped pizza Tess? But I had no time to respond because I was already out the door and on my way. I’ll stop talking about my love of potato pizza and just say how amazing the pizzas at Pizzeria 1889 are. They’re thin-crusted masterpieces cooked in a wood-fired oven to delight the tastebuds of many. If you’re going to see a movie at Palace Cinemas at Barracks, leave an hour or so beforehand to check this place out. Or takeaway and eat it in your room at home so no one can steal it from you. I’d do it, it’s ok. Be advised that its opening hours are just«til late» with no specific time given.
