Rabbits, horses and health nuts rejoice, this store nestled on Bondi Road is about to become your mecca. Despite its mystical name, it is an abundance of all things organic and life-conscious, whether to you that means avoiding food allergies, or animal products all together, or binging on organic mung beans and popping herbal supplements. They have a resident naturopath ready to help with free consultations, a bulk food sections for those nuts, beans, grains and herbs you’re ready to horde, a small resources section if that obscure vegan+gluten free cookbook has been eluding you, a juice and smoothie bar if you need that wheatgrass shot to really rev you up in the morning, and a deli counter with their own delicious creations from wraps and veggie patties to the world’s best gluten-free macadamia nut brownies. I’m not joking about the brownies. They’re small, but perfectly formed, just like the Health Emporium.

I’d heard and read about The Health Emporium before I visited it. I had high expectations. To be honest it took me a little while to warm to the place. It was smaller than I thought it would be yet they manage to stack a whole heap in. There is a huge range of fresh food — from artisan breads, organic fruit and veg, dairy, meats and home made goodies in the food counter but there’s also an excellent range of organic packaged and dry goods. The small library of books are good and there’s a gentle community feel about the place. They also have a herbal dispensary with an naturapath onsite Wednesday and Saturday for consultations($ 55). I’d come here for the gluten free muffins, organic espresso and organic wine. If you regularly shop here you get 5% discount on your purchase if it’s over $ 20 and 7% off for $ 100.00 or more.

I’ve never been into this store and was completely blown away by it. The health emporium is an awesome place. This health food and organic store goes the extra step in trying to provide a wider selection of organic goods in a non-pushy, friendly environment. Some of the great items to browse through on your visit here are their organic selection of nuts, rice, quinoa and tempting breakfast cereals in large containers. From the containers you can measure out the amount you want, which is then priced by weight. Other great stuff here was their large variety of barambah yoghurts(my wife’s favourite brand), sukin cosmetic products(another of my wife’s faves), their made on the spot nut butters(i.e. peanut butter and cashew nut butter), an assorted incense section and their hot food and meal counter at front. One of the better health and organic food stores I’ve been to.

The Health Emporium is an organic health food store much like any other. They have beautiful produce and stock all the usual quality health foods and products. The Emporium tries to source from local small businesses and growers which is commendable but of course all that stuff is more expensive. But fantastic if you can afford it! There’s seating so you can stop for lunch or a coffee while you shop for your tempeh, vitamins, virgin oils or free range eggs and I really love the food here. I love me a bit of hippy food and their tofu fritters are delicious… and the coffee is great and fair trade, natch.
