As far as Mexican fast food options go in Sydney, this one stands well above the unwashed, stanky hoard populated by Mad Mex, Salsas, and an Indian Mex joint called Zambreros. What makes GYG different and better is the taste of their food. The flavors remind me of Mexican joints I’ve been to in Baja. What I really like is the soft & hard tacos they make. The soft taco has a corn tortilla which tastes like a hand-made, stone-ground one you would get in a Taqueria in TJ. The quesadillas are pretty unique as well. My favorite fillings are their spicy shredded pork and grilled chicken. They also have a garlicy lime«mojo de ajo» barramundi that is not typical fast food, steam table stuff. I’m a fan.

Not a very good place, it used to be my favourite till they changed the manager. New staff assumes no one speaks Spanish(which I do) and every time I come with my order she gets bored and says she can’t be bothered and gives it to another employee. Also: who removes mushrooms from the menu ?!

I really enjoy eating burritos and have eaten them at the other store near bondi Junction mall. This location is much larger, and has plenty of seating in comparision to the other location. The burritos are well prepared, and definitely tasty! Maybe they could have a little more filling, perhaps more pico de gallo, then they would be perfecto… I give this place 4 stars, consistantly good burritos, and the location is much better with all of the seating.

Another addition to the GYG chain is the store in Westie’s Junction mall. One GYG store wasn’t enough for Bondi Junction, now there are two –about 10 minutes walk from each other– or 25 across Oz. Good thing is, if you don’t get a seat in one and you MUST have GYG Mexican today(as in now!) and your day just wouldn’t be complete without, it’s not far to the next. It’s an even bigger situation in the CBD, where there are four GYGs. OMG, this has almost Asian metropolitan proportions! If you’ve ever been to Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai etc. you know what that means. The Westfield Bondi Junction store is roomier than the Bronte Road one, and also quieter. The L-shaped store layout allows for a few chill corners. GYG’s food is good and tasty, but I have not found it to be as ‘orgasmic’ as it’s been often described here. If Unilocal would allow me to award half stars, I’d actually give it 3.5 out of 5 for its ‘funkyness’. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a place I’d return to, but I also think it could have more edge and more authenticity to real Mexican food(less some potential bugs). For the prices charged here, I’d expect that. I like that you can get Jarritos(Mexican soft drink) here and you can get extra jalapeños — and extra tissues of quite good quality(gotta love those tissues, but I’m not really rating them here). The open plan kitchen gives you a view into the making of your upcoming lunch, and you can watch it being created. The Westfield BJ store is licensed, so you can grab a Corona with your quesadilla and have a sangria afterwards. Happy life!
