Bondi FM’s café(or «the Bondi FM Café» to those in the know) is The Peach Pit of Bondi.(Or the«The Max» of Bondi if that reference better suits your 90s tastes.) Either way, it’s the place where«the gang» can be found hanging out, dancing, curing hangovers, plotting cray cray shenanigans, dreaming up love triangles with Kelly Kapowski, falling in love, breaking up, or generally just having an amazing meal. If it’s the latter you’re after, I’d strongly recommend coming for brunch and diving in to the corn fritter pancakes with smoked salmon, avocado, rocket and eggs. It’s almost as stunning a dish as Brandon Walsh and bulges as beautifully as AC Slater’s tris. It’s fantastic and welcoming, it’s down to earth and accessible, it’s comfortable and low-key, and it’s also clear that there are some locals who have Norm’ed their way into the hearts of the staff and visa versa. And I say Norm away, Bondi, Norm away. With Bloody Marys that good, I could easily find myself a local fixture.

It’s playful(there’s a tippee in the garden!), attracts a crowd of mostly locals and offers a delicious mix of food, drinks and fresh tunes every day of the week. If you arrive on a summer’s afternoon I recommend you stroll through(past the radio booth on the right) to the back garden. The dappled light, the tippee and casual backyard-style furniture make for a relaxed summer vibe. Radio station Bondi FM(88 fm) is broadcast from within the Café and this the only café in Australia where you can kick back cocktail-in-hand and watch live radio. If you ever wanted to. While the station is a feature the Café is the main attraction — this place is much more a café that happens to have a radio station than a radio station with a café. The staff are friendly, and they know they’ve got a good thing going. The food is delicious and I feel that because Bondi FM Café isn’t a tapas bar offers better value than many Bondi spots. I’ve not had a full dinner here, but have sampled their sociable share plates, including cheese platters, and most recently the«DJ Mix» with pâté, which my friends and I really enjoyed. We also shared a jug of Pimms which my English friend said was ‘perfect’. On a summer’s night Bondi FM Café can, like everywhere else in Bondi, get crazy-busy. I prefer to be there in the afternoon/early evening.

There are two ways you can get to Bondi FM. 1) Enjoy a delicious dinner of tapas and sangria at Roy’s, then lift back their plastic room divider to enter this shared backyard garden. 2) If you can manage to find the skinny, doorless entrance on Curlewis Street, follow the winding pathway that leads to the front end of the bar. This way, you’ll end up strolling past the glass encased booth at the front of the venue(that’s where the radio hosts work from, hence the name of this place) to enjoy this radio station-come-bar’s chilled out atmosphere, full of Bondi locals any given night of the week. The best part of this bar is by far the laid back outdoor section at the rear of the building, which feels just like hanging out in your mate’s backyard with great music playing and bartenders servicing all your needs. They’ve also got a permanent tepee out there, but beware — it only fits about fifteen people, and I’ve witnessed guests get all VIP about letting newbies in. Ahh, Bondi.

«Logical will take you from A to B. Imagination will take you anywhere». Who’d think that a great addition to a location radio station, would be a café/bar. Bondi FM, just minutes from the beach has always been a great beachy, relaxed music vibe, now there’s somewhere for the muso’s to go, and watch the music being made. It’s a great idea, that’s an Australian first. You’ll find a relaxing thong vibe, outdoor seating, big glasses, and fancy cocktails, usually a great bunch of locals flock to this place to escape the sun for a bit of Tucca(Aboriginal for feast)
