Metro Gallery

As High St in Armadale is a little bit of a hub for art galleries I had to have a look through a few and see what style appealed to me most.
The Metro Gallery stood out most for me because of the interesting blends of contemporary and Indigenous art. The paintings had an edge unlike many of the other galleries where I like art to ask questions and be challenging. Don’t get me wrong a like the pretty paintings as well but as a viewer I feel like I get much more out of the different and more surrealist pieces.
I would love to attend an exhibition there sometime to seeing some of the other works done by the talented artists. Worth a look if you like interesting, modern art.

This elegant, commercial gallery is notable for having the annual Metro Art Award, a prize for the best painters under 35 and there is an exhibition of the selected entrants. And the Metro Art Award exhibition is always worth seeing; I went out before the prizes were announced to have a look at the entrants before the panel of judges selected the winner.
The gallery consists of one large white walled gallery space and a bit of corridor gallery space leading to their stock room and back room spaces. When I visited there were a lot of stencils on paper scattered across the bench in this corridor. Metro 5 represents a lot of Melbourne street artists and is the Australian representative for the famous French street artist, Blek Le Rat. There was a Blek Le Rat stencil in a small window space at the entrance and people on Chapel Street were stopping to look at it.

I like art. I like paintings. I’m not someone who knows a heck of a lot about art, but like the saying goes, I know what I like. So I often used to have a bit of a look in here when I was passing through.
It’s a nice little gallery. I haven’t been to any major events here, but I’ve been quite happy to walk through and have a look at new paintings and stuff.
The people in there aren’t normally snobby or pretentious, unlike some of the clientele.
