Fantastic place to have lunch. The laksa was great and the singha beer was cold and delicious. To sum it up: «Winner, winner chicken dinner!» Or «Yummy, yummy in my tummy!»

I met a friend for lunch this week and we decided to go to Penang for old times’ sake. Tucked away in Gilbert Place in the historic Quelltaler House, this used to be one of our regular lunch spots for reliably tasty and quick Asian meals. After a slight misunderstanding of meeting time(this is what happens when you try and be clever and communicate using only emojis and your friend has different ideas about what pictorially represents a quarter) we finally caught up. The menu had changed to a more pictorial format but we both knew what we wanted, ordered quickly and got to chatting. And chatting. And chatting. Because the meals took longer than usual to come out and came separately with a five minute gap between them. Never mind, we’re not in a mega hurry. By the time we both tucked in, we made identical puzzled faces. «This tastes different», we said. My pad thai had a thick clear glutinous sauce and was interspersed with other random items like broccoli, cauliflower and capsicum. The kway teow looked a little more traditional but was just. .. different. Not bad or noticeably off or wrong. Just different. There was plenty of both but I couldn’t get much further than halfway through my gloopy pile and I went in starving. Penang does not abound with ambience. Heavy wooden tables more suited to outdoor furniture and worn seats are jammed into the stark, somewhat grimy dining areas. I can cope with a lack of ambience and beauteous décor if the food is exceptional. I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back after that meal. There is a lot of competition for cheap and cheerful Asian food in the area and I’d probably rather hit up a food court in future. On the plus side, the price is right and they do serve Coke in cans although more refined sipsters may be put off by the lack of glass.

Dont know where to start. Fast and fantastic service meals cooked to perfection the chefs odviously take pride in the meals the prepare. Resonable prices a little hidden away just of currie street but well worth the short walk. Thank You for your great service.

I came here with a group of girlfriends for lunch on a Friday. It was surprisingly not busy, and easy to get a table without a booking. Our orders were taken quickly and the food arrived not long after. I ordered the Penang Fried Koey Teow at $ 10.90 and it was tasty. The Chinese sausage was a nice addition. There was a small hiccup with one of the girls’ drinks. She had to ask for a glass of water 3 or 4 times before they remembered and brought it out after we had all finished eating. Other than that, it was a great place for lunch. And they do split bills as well!

Discovered this little place a few years ago through a friend. Since then we often pop in for dinner and drinks, the prices and location make this very appealing. They are always very friendly and have even accommodated us for a friend’s birthday. I have never been disappointed with a meal, however my friend who can’t eat anything spicey found things a bit too hot, so make sure you let them know how hot you can handle!

I have been going to this restaurant for over 20years now, it started out in a tiny little shop round the corner from the Pancake Kitchen and has moved twice since but still in the same little street. It amazes me that over 20 years the meals remain consistently the same in look and taste. It serves very cheaply priced Malaysian food always served hot and quickly. At lunch time it gets a steady trade of office workers and can get a bit noisy but any other time it seems fine. I guess for me it will always bring back memories of my student days when a cheap meal was highly sought.

I first tried this place a few years ago. Hated it with a passion. It was terrible. If you went expecting a nice Malaysian dining experience, you’d get an awful glob of fried crap served up to you, regardless of what dish you ordered. Sure, some of the dishes looked okay, but they were all really not right. Fast foward to a few weeks ago, and I’d heard that the place had changed ownership. Well, I thought I’d give it a go. What I had was pretty good. The nasi goreng was pretty damn nice. The service is just excellent. They really do a good job of explaining the menu to the uninitiated, the food comes out relatively quickly, and it’s a nice place.
