Despite the name, no hot baked nannas are available for purchase — only deliciously warm sweet and savoury buns. Nanna’s is the original in Chinatown for those Asian-style desserts we all know and adore so much, and where I first discovered my love for custard buns. Oh, that crunchy top! That sweet-filled centre! And when you nab one fresh out of the over so it’s all warm… it’s a gooey daydream people. I can even look past the fact there is no vibe whatsoever(it’s just a hole in the wall, really), and love it purely and simply as a takeaway place. Yet I visit Nanna’s less now that there’s another, much, much larger, option within stone’s throw at BreadTop. Don’t get me wrong; if I’m after custard buns I will definitely still head to Nanna’s — they’re the best I’ve had. And the mini hotdogs, as Scott pointed out, are unreal too. Cheap and awesome if you’re after a quick, tasty sugar high.

Nanna’s is my favourite ‘fast food’ spot in Adelaide, simple as that! Everytime I am near the Central Market I feel drawn to the quaint little shop front in China Town to buy a couple of their phenominally delicious buns. The buns themselves look just as impressive as the stall, in other words pretty boring. But they are slightly sweet and filled with wonderful little tasteables such as BBQ or Sticky Pork, Curry Chicken, Custard and, the most unasuming of all(but the best) mini hot dogs… plus numerous others. I usually get myself a hot dog and a custard(for desert) and then lose myself in flavor country! The buns only cost pocket change(a couple of bucks), so there is no excuse not to give them a try. There does tend to be a bit of a line at lunch though!
