Confession, I struggle having my haircut. Why? Who knows, my long«snip-free» periods only truly began after moving out of home and when I had to start making appointments on my own. The perils of growing up and assuming responsibility perhaps. So for a number of years I would go for 6, 9, 12 months of no trims and as time progressed so did my aversion to hairdressers(and my splint ends, ooh Lord were they severe). After a particularly long stretch I decided that enough was enough and I had to get the hair situation sorted, so on recommendation from a customer it was off to DAS I went, and after that I am pleased to report my haircuts have been bang on 8 weeks ever since. But why? I’ve had my hair cut here by two different people and both were friendly but professional, inspecting my hair condition and quality(first time in ages someone has commented on the fact that I don’t have thick hair, I just have a lot of thin hair, trust levels escalated quickly after that!) and then asking lots of questions about how I styled my hair, how it behaved naturally, what products I used and so much more before even asking what kind of cut I wanted! I felt so at ease with this professionalism I was more than happy to hand my hair over to these people to cut however they thought would suit best. This then provoked a discussion about techniques and then also why they would cut it a certain way and how they expected it to fall etc. A level of commitment was asked of me to pull out the blow dryer every morning to get it right and with a «I can do that!» off we went. I know it seems strange to mention«discussion» in a review about a hairdresser, but this is so important to me. I want to make sure that the cutter knows what my hair will do later and also if I will maintain the style, there is no point putting in a fringe that needs to be straightened every time if I’m not going to do it, just like there is no point in layering my hair a certain way if I actually want more or less waves. Hair care products here smell divine and staff are nice to chat to or just have non-awkward silences with(important at the hairdresser!). Ladies cuts take about 45 min each time and are $ 65(at the time of posting) which is an excellent price for this quality of cut(particularly in the city). I haven’t had my hair coloured here, so can’t comment on that, but I’ve seen many a lovely colour come out on other customers in store! My favourite part though(and to be honest, what truly motivated me to come here) is the online booking system. Through the Facebook page, you can book your appointment by seeing all available appointment times and days for the salon and can specify stylist etc as well. As a shift worker this is a god send. Nothing more awkward then trying to book in an appointment and having to run through 12 different days just to find a time that works. Also keep an eye out for last minute cancellations. My appointments are usually made a day or two before(because I am both spontaneous and poorly organised), usually due to cancels.

Going to a new hairdresser feels like cheating on your partner. You feel guilty, sneaky & hope that you don’t get caught. I visited DAS for the first time the other day & walked out with a cut that I’m extremely happy with. Adam listened closely to what I wanted & put a great spin on it. We chatted throughout & the conversation didn’t feel forced, as it often does at a salon. DAS has a fantastic atmosphere & the staff offer a great service. I’m ready for a divorce.

To be honest, whenever I looked at the hairdressers and clients in this shop they all had short bob cuts with hipster fringes and I thought maybe my long, golden locks didn’t really belong here. I was wrong. After finishing a coffee at SAD next door I was feeling rebellious one day and decided to go next door and book in a time for a cut. Fortunately they had a spot free for me the following day — bonus points! Adam, owner and very trendy hairdresser, spent 45 mins on my hair and I have only had compliments since. He obviously didn’t want to commit to whether a «change of style» would suit me but in a very round-about way he suggested that«fringes were in,» and I may as well give it a go. There wasn’t too much annoying hairdresser chatter, but still some interesting gossip shared(being in the centre of the city it is no wonder) and Adam did a great job on both the cutting and styling front for only $ 60. 2 extra bonus points for free fringe touch ups and them serving you a coffee from SAD while you get beautified. I’d go again just for the free coffee!

Sick and tired of ending up with grandma haircuts, I googled ‘best hair dresser in Adelaide’ and a vogue forum came up with DAS. I did some research about the kind of haircut that I wanted and went along. I didn’t even need to show the pictures. By talking through what I wanted with Adam, I felt confident that these guys were switched on. They got my haircut done with minimal fuss and a great coffee to boot from the SAD café next door. Going on the amount of compliments that I have received for this haircut, I would highly recommend this hairdresser and it won’t hurt your hip pocket either. Sadly their apprentice Bradley has left, his inappropriateness had me in stiches! :-)

For such a good looking shop this place is totally lacking in ego. According to their company overview, this is a place you can ‘get your hair looking fuck off hot and find a new outfit for dancing until you vomit on the weekend. Or just come and hang out and have coffee.’ It’s nice to make assumptions and have them proven wrong: this crew aren’t hipsters at all, they’re unpretentious locals with excellent taste. The shop has a nice masculine vibe with industrial shelves and antlers and lots of leather. I haven’t had my hair done here but I love the unusual jewellery and designs. Apparently goat leather is the thing now, I’m so out of touch. My mate had her photography exhibition here recently and DAS was the perfect venue, intimate, chilled, with beautiful clothes and accessories, and very cool hosts.

Das is a fantastic place if you’re looking for a fresh haircut and some great atmosphere. I wandered in here one day, fed up with my hair, and met Dom. I put myself in his able hands and told him I wanted his haircut, but the girl version. To his credit, he hesitated and asked several more questions before he started chopping away. I appreciate that he made sure exactly what I wanted — too many hairdressers just assume, or flat out don’t do what you ask for. The boys here are great to chat to, so it’s a lovely hour spent getting yourself snipped and shaved as life continues as usual for the boys, getting calls to do photo shoots on the weekend, having friends come in to say Hi and check out the newest clothing in store. Their range of clothing is very hip, and being the dag that I am I can’t comment on it. I did like their selection of bags and accessories however. Lots of nice plain leather. The shop has a beautifully masculine and artistic feel, without being at all macho or exclusive. They also have a great range of hair-care products(with hilarious names). You won’t regret any trip in here, be it just for a look at the clothes or a whole new look on your head-gear.

DAS is a small hair and clothes shop on Ebenezer Place off Rundle. The best thing about this place is the guys running it — Adam and Dom. Very welcoming, good sense of humour, play inoffensive indie tunes instore and have excellent, excellent taste. Around the time this place first opened, I was feeling a little tired of my old hairdresser. Leaving your hairdresser is like leaving a not-so-bad but not-so-great-either boyfriend. You find yourself looking around for something better despite your best intentions. Anyway that’s how I ended up going to DAS. The store itself is decked out in Adam and Dom’s very particular style — they repainted the place black(why it doesn’t feel gloomy I don’t know, but it doesn’t), brought in some local artists for exhibitions, and have been slowly upgrading the place ever since. I usually get Dom to cut my hair, but I hear if you get your hair coloured regularly Adam does an excellent job. The prices are reasonable for the high quality service they offer — if you are a student you can get a cut for $ 50. Sometimes when I’m hard up for cash and in between cuts I give my hair a little trim myself and don’t come back for ages — Dom and Adam never make snide remarks about how ‘it’s been a while’. Which is good, you don’t want a jealous hairdresser(or a jealous boyfriend if we’re continuing on the relationship metaphor). The clothes here are pretty nice, but I think their range of accessories are particularly good. Leather satchels(coloured and plain), Vivienne Westwood jelly heels, and a small range of jewellery. This is the kind of place that some people might complain is too ‘hipster’ — there are certainly places I would label as such — but there is no aloof attitude problems here. Plus if you prefer to make a booking online, they are always on Facebook.
