SOOO many choices!!! It’s hard not to revert back to a younger self when you visit this store. All the fun, colour, excitement and sugar you could want. I am a huge fan of many of the«American» candies — Hershey’s, Peanut Butter Cups, Pop Tarts & Butter Fingers! And you can get ‘em all here along with many others so tasty you will probably come to wish you had never discovered in the first place. Lots of «old fashion» sweets available by the gram and every kind of liquorice you could desire. The customer service is beautiful and everyone comes out of here at least a little bit nostalgic.

Even the outside of Blackbey’s Old Sweet Shop looks good enough to eat, with its chocolate box-like façade. The animated window display has the feel of the best funfair you could ever go to. It’s full of colourful characters cheerily offering tasty treats and seems to hark back to another time of care-free innocence, an idyllic childhood. CONFECTIONERY Blackbey’s is Adelaide’s biggest confectionery retailer and was founded in 1906, according to the company and State Government website . It has confectionery to suit a variety of tastes and there is some great local produce, such as the selection wonderfully textured South Australian liquorice twists — my favourite is the raspberry. The shop also has treats imported from New Zealand, Britain and the United States. These include Kiwi favourite Perky Nana and Pixie bars, a range of American favourite Reece’s, from Peanut Butter Cups to Brownies, and UK goodies such as Flying Saucers and Yorkie chocolate bars. SAVOURYSNACKSANDFAVOURITEFIZZYDRINKS There’s also a fair few savoury snacks from around the world and the store has just received a shipment of my favourite wheat-based snack of Twiglets coated in a yeast extract. The marked-up price of $ 3 for a 45-gram bag is worth it for the great taste — and it’s great to wash the Twiglets down with classic Scottish drink Barr’s Irn Bru, also sold in the shop. As a Pommy expat, I can go quite made in this store and often find it hard to go past the Monster Munch, Quavers and Frazzles crisps. SERVICE The staff at Blackbey’s are as sweet as the wares they sell, but beware this shop packed with confectionery can sometimes become packed with people. It might be best for you to leave the credit card at home when you come here. The temptation to splurge may be too great.
