Convenience is king and when it’s 8pm on a Wednesday and we still haven’t been shopping for the week and Gilbert St IGA seems to be always open when we are a food emergency. The fruit and veg section is a tad hit and miss in terms of freshness and quality, but as are every other IGA. I love their range of Kitchenhand pre-made salads, Enzo and Cibo pre-made pastas and chicken dishes and the good quality antipasto products(great for entertaining). This IGA also comes with an in-house butcher and deli that serves up lunchtime chips and gravy specials, baked goods as well as fresh cuts and marinated quality red meat. It is not actually run by the IGA but helps in making this place a midweek«one stop shop.» Prices are reasonable for a small convenience store and I enjoy the consistently friendly and efficient service(even when you rock up in thongs and trackies on a Sunday arvo).

Boy, this place is an absolutely refreshing surprise — I’m usually quite wary of supermarkets that are open longer hours, simply because they usually seem to charge quite a premium for those extra hours — especially when they’re in the CBD like this one is. I’ve got to say though, not only does it carry all the weekly IGA specials, the normal shelf prices are quite fair, and you can also get both the cheapest dry cleaning I’ve found in the Adelaide Metro area, AND incredibly good value lunches here. Located where they are, they have both a thriving workplace environment to service, and hundreds of trendy little inner city apartments and accomodation. I guess that turnover helps keep the prices down. There’s plenty of off street parking, and an incredible little cabinet full of gourmet desserts and treats… yum!!!

Located in Gilbert Street just off King William Street in the city is one of the best IGA supermarkets I’ve come across. With inner city living at a peak these days, this supermarket is frequented by many a local resident as well as the owners and staff from the abundance of small business in the area. The Gilbert Street IGA is open 7 days and as well as being able to pick up all your normal grocery items, they also have a great selection of gourmet produce in the deli section. There’s a great bakery section and if you’re looking for a bite to eat for lunch, head to the deli counter and grab one of their pre-made rolls. They’re always fresh and really yummy. Just like the bigger Coles and Woolies supermarkets, there are regular specials and quite often some good bargains to be had. These guys will home deliver your groceries and you can phone or fax your order through — how’s that for service!
