The way a pub should be. This is a true local. I can see why The Sullivan’s spent so much time here perched on bar stools(yeah okay you kind of have to be old enough to even know who the Sullivan’s were — Google it). It is the sort of place that is cool in summer and cosy in winter. Bringing any sort of elderly relative here will win you major brownie points. They’ll be owwwing and arhhhing for hours as the décor trips off trips down memory lane, either of pubs just like this one that use to be plentiful all over the nation or memories of the TV show the Sullivans. Either way, major brownie points. The food is nothing specular but the friendly service and the atmosphere more than make up for it. There is no pub wankery food charging $ 35 for a main meal at this pub. The vegetarian selection is quite limited but the Super Salad I tried was pretty good as was the entrée pasta my companion tried. For families there is a $ 15 kids meal with a main and ice cream. It’s the usual drill of chips and something with ice cream and sprinkles/topping that you get on every kids menu. But that makes it even better for that trip with Nana and Pop and the grand-kids — options for everyone! I noticed some colouring-in hung up on the walls so I suspect if you ask for crayons and paper you are going to be in luck. I’ll certainly be going back to The Retreat again, if for nothing other than to hang out in the bar and enjoy a cold beer on a hot day(or a cold beer on a cold evening in front of a cozy fire).
