Kumon

Kumon initially seemed like a great option for our daughter, who was struggling with 6^th grade math. Unfortunately, the program is a complete rip-​off for several reasons.
First, although Kumon seemed like an affordable option (95 euros per month), the money paid only affords you buckets full of worksheets — that parents, not Kumon «instructors», must grade without an answer key on a daily basis — and a small supply bag. For parents, whether working outside or inside of the home, may find the task of having to grade two booklets of worksheets on a daily basis to be rather challenging, especially if their child is performing complex math.
Second, Kumon’s instructors do NOT teach. They will spend maybe 5 to 10 minutes with your child, but then request that the child spend the rest of his or her time working independently — even if your child does not understand what she or he is doing. If your child requires an actual tutor, who is more hands-​on and who can be a firm but fun motivator, then this program is definitely not for your child.
Third, Kumon’s instructors are not math teachers, which might explain why they do not provide any kind of helpful or substantial instruction. They will essentially answer one question but then cap it at that.
Lastly, there is a clause in their contract that states that renewals would be automatic every month until parents terminate the contract in writing. What’s interesting about this clause is that your letter of termination must be submitted FOUR WEEKS BEFORE the end of your last month, which almost guarantees another payment to Kumon.
In short, my husband and I saw no reason to pay for a program that my husband was having to almost independently facilitate at home. Why pay for an instructor, who is not going to instruct your child? And why pay for an instructor, who is not going to grade the worksheets that he or she doles out for your child? We figured we might as well be paying my husband for doing all of Kumon’s work, so we pulled our daughter out of their program and turned to Khan Academy instead.
